The Fox network is making a reality show out of the troubled economy. An upcoming series titled, "Someone's Gotta Go," lets employees of a small business decide which one of their colleagues will be laid off.

Fox says it has no air date yet for the series, which is being developed by the company behind "Big Brother" and "Deal or No Deal." Each week, a different company lays off an employee.

Fox also wouldn't reveal the show's host, which it says is a business consultant who will offer advice to participating companies.

To me, that takes the "reality" thing a little too far.  I would have absolutely no interest in watching something like this; reveling in an employee getting fired (rather than a game show contestant, like on the Apprentice or Hell's Kitchen) is sick to me.

Oh man that's just sick... That's one step up from the next survivor...

Survivor: Space! Ten will head up, only one will come back. You get voted off the space station, they push you towards the sun. Winner gets a million bucks.

Sad thing is I bet they could fill that cast.

This is why fox has been useless to me for many years. They are a no talent hacknetwork, who stumbled into most of thier big non reality shows by accident (simpsons and 24) and killed off there other 2, which they only brought back when another network showed them they were morons (family guy and futurama movies)

The've also cancled a ton of shows that went on to have cult hit status and destroy on DVD sales (firefly leaps to mind)

this saddens me out of fox, but doesn't shock me because i have no respect for the network. all they do is push low budget reality shows, since as long as they get the herd of sheep known as reality TV viewers to watch 1/10 of them, they make out profit wise.  Here's hoping they get hammered in the press on this as they deserve.

although, some blame must be laid at the aformentioned herd of sheep. And im not talking about people who enjoy the occasinal reality show (I do sometimes) im talking about the water cooler crowd here at work who think the mole, the bachleor and big brother are excellent TV on par with the wire.

Ouch.  You hate Fox, huh, crownsy?  I don't think the network as a whole is as bad as you do; I think a lot of their shows are solid.  24, House, Bones, Prison Break, Sarah Connor Chronicles, etc., are all pretty solid TV, as well as their Sunday night animation.

However, this idea for a reality show is wretched.  I'm assuming that this one will be scrapped before it airs, or last about a week.

Similarly, I never felt that "when animals attack" would actually make it to the airwaves.

sarah chronicles is pretty good, and im glad to see summer getting work. 24 and house started great but are pretty much meh to me now. prison break and bones ive never connected with.

And the sunday lineup is all stuff they canceled and other networks revived except for american dad and the simpsons, which i find tired (not its fault, just gotten stale with age, but an incredible show.) and seth ONLY got green lit to do american dad because of how badly they screwed family guy. i like the shows, but that had nothing to do with fox. thank adult swim for animation domination.

I can remember, back when I was in high school, reading an article from a nationally syndicated columnist about the things people would do to (hopefully) become famous, ranging from sitting on the hood of a car as it drove through burning walls of wood to someone offering to eat a light bulb if the reporter would put his name in the paper. Don't underestimate stupidity.

Why not make a reality show based on the rising cost of health care. Each week they get to vote on who gets to die because they can not afford to pay. I mean we could make a Survivor series, in the truest sense. Bet it would be a big hit.

Really, these reality shows based on the pain and suffering of others is beyond me. It's very sad to me that people mistake this for entertainment. How did we get to this point?

Fox has a history of being a trash network. They lucked out on shows that were trash like Family Guy, The Simpsons, and especially Married with Children, and this show will be trash. I predict it will be one of the most popular shows on tv

Not to threadjack, but The Simpsons is "trash"???  It's widely recognized as one of the greatest TV comedies of all time.  You sound like my Jr. High Principal when he banned those "Underachiever and Proud of It" t-shirts.  MWC I'll give you, though I liked it, it pretty much reveled in its own trashiness.  Family Guy is a mix, especially in the first few seasons.

And this show won't be a smash success, I'd be surprised if it lasted a full season in the format as described in the OP.

The Simpsons is trash for different reasons, mostly cause they think they're better than everyone. It's a fairly pretentious show that's built on stereotypes and political correctness.
It's witty, and at times just plain funny what with Homer and whatnot, but in general it's a trash show
It's one of the few shows I can think of right off the top of my head that has an entire character built on attacking a culture only it's a stereotype of one.

I can't really think of any TV comedies off the top of my head that don't play off stereotypes - it's kind of a central method of making fun of people, which is how most comedies try to get laughs.  And using stereotypes to "attack a culture" seems like the exact opposite of being politically correct.  Cartoons do tend to be over-the-top by nature, hence the term "cartoonish".  Reasonable folks can disagree though.

Just out of curiosity, which character are you referring to as attacking a culture?  Cletus?  Comic Book Guy?  Disco Stu?

Anyway, I'll drop the threadjack after this, I was just puzzled cause I haven't heard anyone call the Simpsons trashy since 1993 or so.

There is a difference between the stereotype of a cheap uncle on Seinfeld and a dumb cop on South Park and Flanders on the Simpsons that I was referring to.

It's not politically correct to attack a culture that is itself politically incorrect, especially if you help to make it politically incorrect.

being counter culture doesn't make you trash. Its ok to point out society's flaws, especially with how ridiculous our world has gotten.
