The flu shot doesn't necessarily mean you can't get the flu.  There are many strains of the flu out there, and in the vaccine is the strain that researchers believe will be prevalent that year.  If they get it wrong then you are susceptible to getting it even though a little less susceptible if you had foregone the shot altogether

Not to mention athletes are in a very high risk category for the flu. They travel a lot, are in locker rooms and gyms a lot, and they also physically push their bodies very hard.
