I don't know if it was ever determined if Cassell had a guaranteed contract or not.  If he doesn't and the Celtics were going to cut him, I think it would be done by today.  See Henry Abbott's comments on the guys getting cut this week:

Quote
Players who are on an NBA roster as of Saturday the tenth get their contracts guaranteed for the rest of the season.

To get a player off your roster, you have to waive him. Clearing waivers takes 48 hours, and that process has to be completed on Friday (otherwise the guy is still on your team on Saturday, and this his contract is guaranteed).

So, to cut a player in time to save some money on his salary, you have to cut him on Wednesday or sooner. Which is why around the League, 12th men without guaranteed contracts are being called into coaches offices.

So the team could save some money if they can get his salary off the books.  If he has a guaranteed contract, then it is guaranteed and they save nothing but cutting him now rather than later.

Just food for thought.

Here's the list ESPN made on their weekend dime of players with non-guaranteed contracts.
Quote
All contracts are guaranteed for the rest of the season if a player is on a roster as of Jan. 10 or has not cleared waivers before 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan 9.

Teams will thus be required to shed any player deemed surplus to requirements by 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The 25 players facing the greatest risk over the next few days, all of whom are working on minimum deals:

Mario West (Atlanta); Juwan Howard (Charlotte); Lindsey Hunter and Michael Ruffin (Chicago); Jawad Williams (Cleveland); Rob Kurz, Anthony Morrow, DeMarcus Nelson and C.J. Watson (Golden State); Von Wafer (Houston); Paul Davis and Fred Jones (Los Angeles Clippers); Josh Powell (Los Angeles Lakers); Darius Miles (Memphis); Shaun Livingston and Jamaal Magloire (Miami); Austin Croshere (Milwaukee); Kevin Ollie (Minnesota); Sean Marks (New Orleans); Jeremy Richardson (Orlando); Dee Brown (Phoenix); Malik Hairston and Anthony Tolliver (San Antonio); Jake Voskuhl (Toronto); Juan Dixon (Washington).
Sam Cassell isn't amongst them.

I do not know how his contract works but I'm assuming if he's not likely to be cut it is because he will retire to become a coach.

I'm pretty sure that the original announcement was a guaranteed contract.

I am firmly in the corner that believe Sam I Am must have some serious pictures of either Danny Ainge or Doc doing something naughty. He doesnt even wave a hanky or cheer the right way on the bench. I know, he is so cerebral, a great future coach..well..make him one of our assistants or let him go play for the Thunder.

i actually think that it's good to have Sam's contract to be used to match salary in any potential trade scenario....

because we would be losing nothing by including him in a deal...he would most likely be waived and back with the Cs as a coach or what-have-you...

We'd lose his coaching abilities and two technical fouls
Yup

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I think this team and Sam Cassell are inseparable at this point.

This.

Also, I believe Cassell's is a veteran minimum contract, which is partly subsidized by the league. So, even if the luxury tax implications are figured in, the team would not be saving a whole lot of money by cutting him. And, despite the opinions of some on this blog, I don't believe Wyc and company are so tight-fisted that they'd cut Cassell to save a couple hundred thousand dollars.

As quite possibly the only one here with a Celtics #28 jersey, say NO to cutting Sam!

Unless we get Starbury and Pruitt learns to play.
God bless and good night!

I do like Juwan Howard and Lindsey Hunter from this list though if Joe Smith and Marbury don't work out...Actually, what are thoughts about Hunter instead of Marbury?  Tough nosed, defensive minded, can hit a shot, is he a good ball handler thought, I can't remember?
Let’s go Celtics!!

how is it you have a goldclub scouting report on gabe's past, future and present skill levels based on a rare 4 minutes a night once a week or so in which he looks pretty solid?

And i know your going to say "well doc doesn't play him when it matters, so clearly he sucks, his solid play comes in garbage time" but that excuse could be used on any of our young players throught doc's tenure, and gabes a 2nd round pick to boot.

Not saying gabe is going to be a great player, just saying im holding off on my rush to judgment one him being a scrub until I have something representing a sample size.

I was waiting for Sam to start yapping at refs last night to try and offset what MJ was doing down the other end.  Now that would have been earning the veteran minimum.  ::)

The alternative, how about we just start playing the guy. Cassell, that is. At least he can get his own shot -- bad shots, but shots nonetheless. Would you rather watch Baby shoot elbow jumpers or Cassell?
