Though I’ve lived in America for the last 9 years, I’m originally from Scotland, where I lived until the year 2000 when I was 20.  I went to College in Edinburgh, and thankfully, that was the only Scottish city where there was a team in the British League.  Though I was never that into British basketball, and I was actually a fan of the Bulls back then, I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to watch some live basketball being played at a high level.  The Edinburgh Rocks weren’t a great team if I recall correctly.  I managed to catch about a half dozen games that season, most of them losses.  I somehow had talked my friend from computing class into going to the games with me and despite him having no interest in basketball, he really got into the games which made the experience that much better for myself.

So on this particular occasion, the Rocks were playing one of the premier teams in the league.  I’d be lying if I said I remember which team, but it was a team good enough to seemingly put the game away in the first half.  The Rocks had an abysmal half.  If fact, to be honest, they didn’t have a great team at all.  I remember their back up center came to my pick up court once.  I matched up with him, and I didn’t do half bad against him despite him being about 6 inches taller.  They did seem to have one talented player, who was freakishly athletic, and a good defender, but I don’t remember him being much of a shooter or ball handler.

Anyway, this player (who’s name I don’t remember), started to get things going for them in the second half.  I feel like they were down by about 20, and this guy seemed to be single handedly getting them back in the game, mostly on dunks. I feel like there was about 5 minutes left in the game when he stole the ball and looked to try and beat the defense down the floor for an easy basket that would tie up the game.  The defense did catch up to him, but they couldn’t stop him from raising up for the dunk and dunk he did!  He shattered the entire backboard, Shaq style!  Everyone was on their feet.  The place went crazy like I have never seen in person before or since.  He wasn’t even a big guy, probably 6’6” and 220lbs or in that vicinity, but it was just such an aggressive in your face dunk that the backboard had no chance.

So there we are.  A few minutes left in the game, with everything tied up, and no one is sure what to do.  They can’t seem to come up with an alternative basket or backboard, so eventually the PA announcer lets us know that the game will conclude in their practice gym at the other side of the building.  Of course, this gym has no bleachers, so the majority of the crowd couldn’t even get in there.  My friend and I were lucky enough to squeeze in.

The game resumed, and the Rocks kept the momentum going their way.  They started pulling away and it seemed like a victory would be the perfect finish to the crazy comeback and backboard shattering evening.  But the athletic guy who previously shattered the backboard wasn’t finished.  He got the ball on another fast break, and did the exact same thing!  Yes, he just shattered his second backboard of the night!  From the few fans that squeezed into their practice gym, there seemed to be as much noise as there was when he did it for the first time!  I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing.  No one could.  It was out of this world.

After some further discussion between officials, and employees of the venue, they decided to declare the game over, and the Edinburgh Rocks victorious!

Go Scotland!

P.S. – some details might not be exactly right.  I have a terrible memory and this was almost 10 years ago.

The Pierce LeBron Game was the best game I've ever seen in person.  Also opening night this year was very, very, very special for me.

Two Mondays at the Deutsche Bank Championship also stand out for me.  I was there in 06 when Tiger came back to beat Vijay a year after Vijay had beaten him in Norton to take over the number one spot in the world.  I was also there on Monday in 07 when it was Tiger and Phil in the final group, one of the few times that Phil stared down Tiger and beat him head to head down the stretch.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

For me it was the 1991 ECAC Hockey finals game between Clarkson and St Lawrence. Clarkson won 5-4 and it was an awesome game. They year after that it was also awesome because SLU won. I still have a paper appetizer plate (the small ones) signed by all 5 starters, I was 8 or 9 years old at the time.

Following Tiger in a tourney is always a memorable event.  I was lucky enough to see him a couple of years ago in Norton paired with Phil and Vijay.

  • TRANSFORMATION INTO CHAMPION COMPLETE!!!
Mine are all from last year, game one in 2007, this was the first time the big three was together, and the KG intro was insane, there was such electricity and they lived up to it.

Game 7 of the ECF, the Pierce/Lebron duel, it was pretty amazing to see Paul physically not allow the Celtics to lose.

Game 1 of the finals, it was finally happening, it was real, it was destiny.

Game 6 of the NBA finals, this is by far my ultimate experience in sports. The sheer joy and elation during the game was unmatched. The hour or so where the C's were up by 40 and the outcome was not in doubt was amazing, there was so much time to take it all in. I watched the game with my Dad, in our seats we have had for 10 years, during the game I kept thinking about all the bad losses we had watched, all the times we never left early, and it was finally paying off.

2007 season finally between the Giants and the Pats.  Pats got their perfect season, but we all remember the rest of the story.

Bronson Arroyo no hitter while playing for the Pawsox at McCoy Stadium...

Nipmuc High School winning back to back State Championships in baseball, went to both games.

Redsox coming back and beating the Angels April 22, 2008...

sorry I only go to baseball and soccer games in person. I've never been to a basketball or hockey game, and only one Pats game and it was preseason.

I am older than most of you, but here goes in no particulat order. Cous's 50 point game against Syracuse in 3 0r 4 overtimes. 1956-'57 All Star Game in Boston (Sharman throws a length of the court pass to Cousy and the ball goes straight in the hoop with Couz cutting underneath it), Chamberlain playing for the Harlem Globetrotters at the Garden, the Celtics playing at the old Boston Arena, Ted Williams hitting his 500th home run at Fenway, '61 all star game at Fenway (Don Schwall pitches into the sixth and the game is called because of rain. Schwall is the losing pitcher.)Bob Cousy night at the Garden when someone yells down from the rafters 'we love ya' Couz, the '59 Celts-Minneapolis Lakers I think. The final is 173-139. Heinsohn has 45 and Russell doesn't play that day.I saw Russell's first game at the Garden by the way. He comes in at the end of the 1st quarter. 12/6/'56 somehow stands out in my mind. He had a commitment to hugh jump in the Melbourne Olympics. He entered the season late.It was a Sunday afternoon game I am fairly certain. I saw Rocket Richard, his brother, the Pocket Rocket, Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuck, Jacque Plant, Bobby Orr, and many more play hockey, Cowens diving on that loose ball at center court, the triple overtime game against Phoenix, Gerald Henderson steal the ball,C's beat Philly in Boston for Eastern finals after being down 3 games to 1, then the following year lose the 7th game and hear BEAT LA, the first game of the '85 championships against LA ( the massacre game, we scored 145 points. I have been to every finals series of the C's since the first and ending in 1986 when I left the states to live overseas.I was paying a visit though in the Boston area in 2004 and managed to get tickets for the fourth game against the Yanks down 3 game to none. That's about it from the top of my head.

Hoop

The comeback against the Nets in game 3 of ECF in 2002.  Stayed the entire game and the fourth quarter was the most intense 12 minutes that I have ever witnessed in sports.

Baseball

Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, aka Dave Roberts game.  Sitting in the right field bleachers freezing to death, I had a perfect view of the amazing steal and Papi's walkoff was right in front of me.

Sentimental

Reggie Lewis night.....i was young but i'll always remember that game, despite a pretty bad celts team and bulls blowout while Jordan rocked number 45. Also, it was the only time that I ever got to see Jordan play in person.
Looking for a Sig designer....obviously i will be greatful with tps.

Looking for a Wire - Rondo theme....PM with ideas and I'll tp

Opening Night 2007. KG and Ray's first game. I had floor level seats. During the first few minutes of that game the atmosphere in the building was like nothing I've ever experienced before. The intensity and focus that all the fans exhibited was almost eerie. I'd never seen a sporting event before where everyone was so locked in to what was happening on the floor.

Game 6 and Game 7 2007 ALCS. My most memorable moment from these games came in the 1st inning of Game 6, when J.D. Drew hit a grand slam off Fausto Carmona, breaking out of his year-long slump. In game 7 I had standing room only tickets and could barely see anything. I remember wondering why Kenny Lofton didn't go for home when he clearly could have made it. I also remember Pedroia's icing on the cake homer in the 8th inning, and Coco making the spectacular catch in the triangle to clinch it, and the place going bananas immediately afterward.

BC vs. Florida State, 2007. This wasn't very fun, but it was important. Undefeated Boston College, led by Matt Ryan, was the heavy favorite to knock off FSU in this primetime Saturday night affair. With everyone else in Division I choking, BC looked to actually have a chance of making it to the National Championship, nevermind a BCS game. But FSU put a huge dent in BC's National Title hopes, defeating them with some help from bad interceptions by Ryan and poor place-kicking (as usual). BC went on the lose again versus Maryland, and to fall short of even playing in a BCS game when they lost to VT in the ACC Championship.
