Well, I had my doubts of whether they would be able to find a middle-ground to work it out, but it appears that the Sox have locked up Pedroia to a 6 year $40.5 million deal (and then there is reportedly a club option for a 7th year).  This buys back all of his arbitration years, and a couple FA years I believe.

This looks like a great deal for the Sox, and Pedroia has the security to know that he is set for life.

Now lets see if they can convince Lester to sign as well...

Seem's like a bit more then I expected (not saying it was a bad deal).

Hopefully he doesnt pull a Cano and begin to suck after getting an extension.

I just don't see that in Pedroia's makeup.  I don't know if we'll ever see a better season than this past year, but I just don't see him totally sucking because he got paid.
Yup

TREMENDOUS DEAL! What's the market like for 25 year old second basement with a .313 career average, a World Series ring, Gold Glove caliber defense, not to mention an AL MVP award.

Think it's a little more then $6.67 million a year? Ask any of the following players, all of whom are making over DOUBLE Pedroia's salary.

Troy Glaus
Barry Zito
Mark Buerhle
Pat Burrell
Andruw Jones
Miguel Tejada
Richie Sexson
Tim Hudson
Jim Thome
Mike Hampton
Rafael Furcal
Carlos Delgado

The list goes on... Incredible deal for the Sox the money is really really small compared to what he could have gotten.

"Let me call him," Floyd said.

The man shook his head. "O.J. doesn't give out his cell," he said. "He'll call you."

The thing is, it averages out at $6.67 million per year.  So even if Pedroia did regress a bit, he still wouldn't be paid that rediculously.

I have a feeling he won't have that many seasons like last year, but I also would be amazed if he doesn't average seasons where he hits at least .300 with 190 hits, 10 HR, 45 doubles, 65 RBI, and good defense.

Hard to have a problem with this one. Any time you can lock up a 25 year old reigning MVP for 7 years on the cheap, I say pull the trigger ( unless he happens to be a motorcycle enthusiast).

This is great news.  Great deal for the team.  He won an MVP this year and in my opinion he hasn't reached his full potential yet.  He is a great team player, tough as nails and a gamer night in and night out.  He is the kind of guy you want on your team come winning time.  Having him wrapped up for 6 more years for this price is phenomenal.

I know the Sox haven't had many captains and don't need to name one when Varitek is gone.  However down the line I think this kid is going to be the next player with the C on his shirt.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

Barring injuries or an unforseen drop in skills, the Sox made out like bandits on this deal.

The only way this is a problem is that six years from now Pedroia will be older entering free agency, potentially setting us up for a bad deal. Needless to say, that's not really a concern right now.

Nice work Theo!

Honestly its a little short for a player of pedroias calibre. What he doen in his short mlb career so far?? how about win rookie of the year and mvp this year!

He is only going to get better

I'm glad he signed for the amount he did and hopes he will be happy. Still he should have signed at least for 55 million for 6 years or given bonus parameters so that he could get nearly 10 a year.

Don't hope for youk to be as generous and i expect he will at least ask the redsox for 10 million per season and outside bidders starting at 12

Well, you have to take into account that Pedroia would have a tough time making more than $1-2 million next year, and $3-5 million the year after that,  when he gets to arbitration, and so forth.

My guess is by the end of the deal he is making about $10 million per year, if not more.

He was four years from free agency, so there is no market. He couldn't have gotten deals like these guys because it's structured. But it's still a good deal.
