BTW, I agree with the whole thing about team's without an "s" at the end of their names.  I wouldn't mind, but it aggrevates me whenver I hear an announcer say "The Heat HAS lost 9 of 10."  It should be "HAVE".  It's the name of a team.  Just like the Celtics HAVE won 17 NBA Championships.

(Not too shabby, IMO)

You have to log in to view it?! But I would love to see the Thunder's logo, assuming that's what it is.
Anything is possible!!!

Sorry to disappoint you.
It's just some dude's take
on how their logo could be.

I thought everyone could view it...  ???

Oklahoma City Slickers was the best name I had heard prior to the Thunder. I'm guessing they couldn't get copyright because of the film. Fun name though.

Along those lines there's a really commonly misspoken bit `o' grammar involving whether a team is referred to by Boston or Celtics.

It should be:

Boston lost its 3rd game in a row.

and

The Celtics lost their 3rd game in a row.

Very few announcers or reporters get that one right.  It's a tough to even catch yourself saying correctly, but it was hammered into my head in journalism class.  (hopefully I have a better grip on this one than I did with affect/effect ;) )

and by the way, I sorta made the call on the name Thunder being a stand alone name, as opposed to the Rolling Thunder, or whatever. (so hooray for me... ::))

The NBA has filed for trademark rights to six nicknames for the league's new Oklahoma City franchise: Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind.

An attorney for the league made the filing Monday with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Marshal is usually spelled with one l. It's not clear why the league used a variant spelling.

The filing is listed on the patent office's Web site.

The NBA and the team have refused to discuss possible new names for the team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics ahead of an official announcement, which has not yet been scheduled.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3505617

I'd rate those names:

1. Barons
2. Bison
3. -----
4. -----
5. -----
T6. Energy
T6. Thunder
T6. Marshalls
T6. Wind

"Energy" and "Wind" just suck.  "Marshalls" is a cheap department store chain, or a misspelled variation of "Marshals"; both stink.  "Thunder" is just lame, although not quite  as lame as "Energy" or "Wind", I suppose.

Just make it "Barons".  That works just fine.

Actually, when referring to a team as a whole, it is singular.  So, the correct reference would be HAS.  For example, replace the nickname with the general word "team".  The "team" HAS won 17 NBA Championships.  As ridiculous as it actally sounds, the correct grammar is... The Celtics HAS won 17 NBA Championships.  The problem is the "s" at the end of Celtic or any team name makes people consciously change the HAS to HAVE, even though it is incorrect grammar.  So the teams without an "s" at the end are actually announced properly.

Marshals isn't terrible, but the registered name is "Marshalls", i.e., like the department store chain.

That's actually incorrect.  Sports teams are something known as "collective nouns".

Quote
Collective nouns: Nouns that denote a unit take singular verbs and pronouns: class, committee, crowd, family, group, herd, jury, orchestra, team. ...

Team names and band names, however, take plural verbs. The Miami Heat are battling for the league's worst record.

Link.  See also, here.

So, it would be "The Celtics have won 17 championships".
