Sportscenter in Boston today for their Title Town series, in case any of you didn't know.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/titletown/news/story?id=3418178

Because the case for Boston as title town is being made today on Sportscenter, they are playing all things Boston on ESPN classic today. Earlier they played game 7 of the 1984 NBA finals, and currently (4-5 pm) they are playing SportsCentury: Larry Bird. At 5pm, they will be playing the famous "Sports Final" where Larry, Ted Williams, and Bobby Orr were guests with Bob Lobel. Also, Sportscenter will making the case for Boston throughout their show much like they have with past cities. So, if you have nothing to do for the next couple hours, there are some things to watch.

Also, is there any doubt that Boston is Title Towm, USA? They decide by America voting on it, so I am not sure how the rest of the country will vote, but I don't even think it is close.

Yeah, Boston is "Title Town", at least this decade.

If you're going overall, it's New York.  There aren't really any other serious candidates.

I don't agree Roy, Boston is a serious candidate.

But, let's stick with the Boston Arguement:
MLB: NY 34, Philadelphia 6, Detroit 4, Chicago 5, Boston 8
NBA: NY 2, Philadelphia 3, Detroit 3, Chicago 6, Boston 17
NHL: NY 4, Philadelphia 2, Detroit 11, Chicago 3, Boston 5
NFL: NY 4, Philadelphia 0, Detroit 0, Chicago 1, Boston 3

Totals: NY 44, Philadelphia 11, Detroit 18, Chicago 15, Boston 33.

But, if we are basing it on titles only, you better throw Montreal into that category and Manchester England.  Montreal has 24 NHL championships and 7 CFL chamionships for a total of 31.  Manchester England (Manchester United alone) have 50 various soccer championships.  This doesn't include the other Manchester teams, Rugby, or Cricket championships.

I wonder what ESPN is using for it's final decision.....

I think Boston would run away with it, if you divide total titles by the number of seasons for every eligible team.

Overall I think it comes down to Boston, LA, and New York for the final 3.  You can't assume that Boston is title town just because of their recent success this decade.  Just keep that in mind.

Does anyone know how they choose the winner?

People are neglecting the collegiate aspect of it.  It's not just professional sports teams.  Look at the list, a good number of them of primarily college towns.

I actually think that component certainly helps Boston's case as well.  For one, look at the amount of NCAA hockey national titles that BU, Harvard, and most recently Boston College have taken home.

""SportsCenter" will travel to 20 communities this summer before letting SportsNation make the call on the city deserving the name TitleTown USA. Vote on this page starting July 24."

Great point. There are many college towns that dominate, but not through pro sports, and many pro cities that dominate without college sports making a contribution. The fact the Boston has Bu and BC as relevant college hockey teams helps their case.

If you include colleges it has to be LA, UCLA has like 100+ by itself.

It has to be Boston currently, I mean it isn't even close. But overall NY has the most titles, so there's some logic to that pick, though they have like 10,000 teams, at least in Boston we have one team per sport! But, yeah, if you then include college, LA becomes a contender...
Now, on to 18...

Does anyone else think unbiased writers and sports analysts should choose the winner?  Obviously anyone from Boston will vote for Boston, anyone from LA will vote for LA, etc. etc.

Seems a bit unfair to me.

I 100% agree. However I assume ESPN is doing this to get the viewers attention and what better way yo get viewers attention then to have the viewers vote.

Not to quibble too much, but New York has 8 football titles, four Superbowl ones and four NFL ones.

Also, New York has 8 NHL championships, between the Rangers and the Islanders.

That brings New York up to 52.

Let's not forget how many teams New York has.  They have one more in baseball, football, and hockey.  Boston has 11 less titles but with many fewer teams.

I also agree with Donoghus with the college point.  We have two of the best college hockey teams of all time in BC and BU.  Boston is a pro sports town but we also have a much bigger college base than New York does.

I saw the LA episode and they included UCLA and USC as both being part of LA.  If you add both of them in with the professional sports teams of LA, I think it may put them over the top.  Not that I like LA leading in anything.

Considering how much of the rest of the country hates Boston I don't see us having much of a chance of winning this thing.
