I'm not sure what people want the Boston crowd to do if the best player on the other team is having two, god awful games in a row in our building. Should we being chamting encouragement to LeBron? Would a chant of "You're still a superstar!" have been more appropriate?

He sucked in two straight games in Boston. Guess what? If he's not expecting to be jeered unmercifully, then LeBron is a lot more immature than I ever thought he was.

Boston fans jeered Darryl Strawberry horribly in the 1986 World Series with the DARRRRRRR_RYLLLLLL chant and he was one of the best power hitters in the game at the time. Just because a player is great at what they do doesn't mean we as fans should be afraid ofusing any chant that belittles him. If he's not man enough to react back then maybe he is overrated.

And again, I am not afraid of LeBron going off. Yes, he has come back from 0-2 deficits in the playoffs before. But none of the teams he came back against had a player the caliber of Ray Allen, nevermind 3 players the caliber of KG, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combined. On any given night where LeBron could go off one of the Big Three could in similar fashion negating LeBron's presence. The Cavs would then need the rest of their team to beat the rest of the Celtics statistically with 2 of the Big Three included among the Celtics contingent. I just don't see that happening.

I am very confident in my opinion that a one superstar team, no matter how good the superstar, cannot beat a team with multiple superstars on them. For proof see Jordan pre-Pippen and Kobe pre-Shaq. Jordan couldn't beat the Celtics and Pistons until he got more superstar help in Pippen. The Lakers went no where without the Shaq-daady when Kobe was trying to carry them solo.

It's not that people chanted, heck I chant with the best of them. But it's the type of chant.  You call a known super-star "Over-rated" is just stupid, dumb and it make us Celtics fans look as such.  I wouldn't mind if everyone chanted "Queen James" or "Le-Bron, Le-Bron" or even "Your not MJ, clap, clap, clap" "Your not MJ, clap, clap, clap".  Those type of chants are ok with me.  But "Over-rated" I mean if Lebron is "over-rated" then so is KG, Paul and Ray cause last I check Lebron has been to the finals and neither one of those guys have been.

  • Yup
The "Darryl" chant had to be the loudest jeering name chant ever.  It worked for a game or two too, but ohhhhhhhh, did he bite back.
Yup

Lebron is not overrated! We all know this....

However I highly doubt that a chant
is gonna unravel Lebron's superpowers.
If the Cavs win game 3 it's not gonna be because of a chant stimulating his ego. I know our boys can
handle him.

so what if fans chant fact or fiction...as long as they are present and supporting the Celtics.

Go Celtics!!!

I don't understand why we can't call him overrated. He is. Many in the media, a great many if not all, have already annointed him the best or second best player of all time. He isn't half the defensive player that Kobe is. He's not 1/4 as clutch as Michael was late in games. He couldn't carry Larry's jock when it came to passing, and I will contend that at this point he may not even be in the top 25 players of all-time. Maybe by the end of his career he will be, but he isn't anywhere  near as good as the pundits have him being right now or as good as he is treated by the refs.

I'm sorry if you are somehow offended at having LeBron being called overrated, but the fans have a right to chant what they want and honestly if you look at it very closely the fans were right. Most had LeBron coming into Boston and tearing it up. His C game didn't even show nevermind his A game. So for the effect he was suppose to have on this series, so far, it is overrated.

You say most had Lebron coming into Boston and tearing it up. But then you say you don't see how one superstar can take down a team with 3 superstars. So how does that make Lebron over-rated? Was Jordan over-rated before he got Pippen? Was KG over-rated, and just a stats-machine, before he joined the Celtics?

I just don't see how Lebron can be over-rated, when he is no argument a top 5 player in the league, and clearly going to be in the hall-of-fame. We can argue about his place amongst the other greats, but I think he at least deserves comparison to them.

For proof see Kobe pre-Shaq.

There was no such thing as a "Kobe pre-Shaq"- they both got to the Lakers in 1996-97.  Unless you meant Kobe post Shaq...

Thank you, my bad. I did mean that but just kept rambling with the pre- thing.

As for this statement:

Since when does saying that people thought LeBron was going to come in and tear it up mean that he was going to beat the Celtics? I meant that he would have good games, not necessarily that his team would.

And as for the Jordan and KG comment, KG and Michael weren't annointed as one of the top two or three players ever to play a game in the first 2-4 years of their careers. Many considered them very special singular talents but they were never mentioned in the same breath as Bird and Magic that early in their careers nevermind Wilt, Russell, Jabbar, Robertson, Cousy, Havlicek, West, or Baylor.

And I said that by the end it is quite possible that he will be among the very best ever but he isn't now. And if most are already saying he is at that plateau, when he clearly isn't, then what is so wrong about calling him overrated?

But what has LeBron done so far but put up some nice stats and bring what is easily the worst team ever to make the NBA Finals, to the Finals. The Eastern conference was a joke last year and he beat a Wiz team without two of their stars, a horrible Nets team that took them 6 deep and Detroit, who had yet to get their youth infusion and contributions that they got this year that has invigorated their team.

nickagneta - TP for you. great post, i've been saying the same thing for several years. lebron is probably the best 23 year old of all time. but since his 2nd year in the league, people have been placing him in the all-time great category. not even close. win some MVP's, titles, and make more clutch shots in big games. when it's all said and done, he may be the best ever, but he's not there yet. so i do agree with you, he is overrated by a lot of people.

You cannot seriously demean the accomplishment of taking down a Pistons team with three all-stars, all whom had played together for a couple seasons and coming off a title run. They didn't have their youth infused? Maybe, but they had more than enough veteran presence to make up for it. Cleveland didn't have home court advantage and it didn't even take seven games. What Lebron did last year was incredible. The Eastern Conference was a joke last year, but so was the roster surrounding Lebron. The Pistons were a legitimate contending team and would have been even if they played in the West.

Whereas I prefer to agree LeBron is the best ever, and the Celtics locked down on him to the stat line of 8-of-42 shooting. This tells me what I prefer to know ;)

Well I personally think Lebron can be mentioned in the same breath as Magic and Bird. Sure he hasn't won the championships, but I think we can all be very sure that if he had Bird's or Magic's supporting casts, the Cavs would be romping through the league. Anyway who does it hurt to speculate about such matters. I think we just have different frames of refernce when we say over-rated. No need to get so upset.

But I don't get how you're downplaying Lebron's performance against the Pistons. Detroit was up 2-0 and Lebron just broke them down COMPLETELY. They gave up trying to stop him and couldn't do it for 4 straight games. That was a veteran, championship core. You have to give him props there.
