Bobby Krivitsky: The Celtics have officially announced the signing of Amari Williams to a two-way deal. And while there has been talk about a growth spurt this offseason, they still list him as 7'0" tall.
A growth spurt at 24? That would be exceptionally unusual. Is he joking?
It was one of those fake, easily debunkable click bait posts on social media.
Actually, there might be some truth to it. He measured at 6-11 in the draft process last year, and was listed as that last year in Maine, while he is now officially listed as 7 feet. Not sure he is 7-2, as the rumors say, but his height was raised, which is pretty unusual.
It could be that he measured 6'-11.25" last season (rounded to 6'-11") and this year he measure 6'-11.75" and they rounded that up to 7'-0". If he grew 0.5" or more, I'll take it but more likely, he just had better posture or more hair or something.
Most likely correct. Even last year on draft night some were listing him at 7 feet, which is what he was listed at Kentucky. That said, having seen him very up close in Maine (got to interact with him briefly before a game) I can attest that he is very large. Like noticeably bigger than other pro-basketball players large, so I guess some part of me wants to believe he did grow.
His pre-draft official NBA measurement was 6-10.5 last year, no shoes. He did not take a measurement in shoes. So 6-11 at the start of the season was rounding up. Official heights are supposed to be without shoes, so if he is listed at 7-0, he has to be at least 6-11.5. Maybe he was slouching last May, but he might have actually gained an inch or so.
