Expiring contracts aren't particularly valuable.    Fans get excited about them as much as they do $27 million trade exceptions.

And, we got one 1st, a pick swap, and two seconds. Thats about 1/3 of what Desmond Bane returned, and we literally had to take on the worst contract in the NBA to get that.

The Celtics should have begun a rebuild in 2025. The last two draft classes were stacked with a plethora of talent. The upcoming drafts in 2027 and 28 are meant to be quite poor, with 2027 deemed the poorest in decades.

Now the Celtics are left with a squad not good enough to compete and without the assets to create a contender. To say I am disgusted would be an understatement.

Sounds like the situation was untenable. They were going to trade him no matter what before the season started. What I do not get is why now. The season is several months away. Why not wait for to see if another team ups their offer. Did Brad think someone else was in on PG13?

Anyway, I was looking at the assist and rebound rankings. I thought Jaylen had a small chance at getting in there. He was outside the top 10 for both but I was stuck that the numbers at 9th/10th place were not that high. So how many rebounds and assists did Jaylen get in 10 years? He was about 1,000 off in each category.

So here is my point ...

Jaylen had 1,953 assists in 10 years. In 10 years! That is 200 assists a season. How hard is to get 200 assists? That is 2.5apg if you are playing 80 games. Not that hard. Not when you are scoring 20+ppg and have the ball as much as Jaylen does.

So Jaylen has been above 20ppg for the last 7 years of his career.

How long did it take Jaylen to have a 200 assist season? Year number 6. Ouch.

In his 2nd and 3rd year he was down around 13ppg and 14.5ppg. Okay, for a so-so passer, not so bad to miss 200ast at that scoring volume. 20ppg is dodgier in year 4. In year 5, he would have made it but he missed too many games. Unlucky. Then years 6-8 he had 230-250 assists a season. Ups it to 289 in year 9. And 368 last year. Career high.

Or looked another way. First 4 years = 1.4apg. Next 4 years = 3.4apg to 3.6apg. Last 2 years = 4.9apg. Nice growth.

He is getting there. The 20-5-5 guy. Or the 25-5-5 guy I should say.

He clearly doesn't have the JT skills in playmaking - which by the way were built over time, at the beginning he wasn't good either - but I must admit that in the last season he has a bit improved in it (didn't check the stats). But definetely he hasn't a lot of vision...nor maybe this is interesting for him, that always look more concentrated on onevsone basket on both sides of the floor. It would ba fair also to mention the leadership, that would be missed as well. Btw I may understand the ratio in exchanging him, but this trade to me looks more getting rid of him.

Roy, who are you referring to as a mentally unstable loser ? Paul George ? I would not think that you were talking about Bill Walton.

Not trying to be an apologist but I think in the regular season, it will be evident why Brad did this trade. It is not addition by subtraction because we?re getting Tatum back. But I think a likely scenario is that the Celtics still finish the season with a strong record and the other guys are able to flourish without JB.

What worries me more is when the playoffs roll around. For me, analytics is an exercise of how things will regress to the mean. And that if teams played in a 100-game series, you can confidently predict who will have an edge.

But teams play a 7-game series. And the trend over the course of a hundred regular season games may no longer hold true because a playoff environment is different. This is where I worry this trade might bite us in the butt. Because to be fair to JB, he was fearless in the moment.

I am hopeful PG can do enough to be 80% of what JB brought to the table.

Financially, as others have pointed out, there are no savings this year. However, the biggest difference for me is the Celtics do not have to extend PG to a max extension, nor will he warrant it. And so the team gets out of the obligation of overpaying for JB, especially if it does not view him as a max player.

Unfortunately this feels like a year that will divide the fanbase up quite a bit. The advanced stats side vs. not is going to be waiting to prove their side tight a bit.

I think there may be some truth in those advanced stats but I think one thing it did not account for is JB always felt like the tone setter. He would always be strong in the 1Q and if there was someone needed to show more emotion or defend a teammate it seemed to be him mostly. Tatum and White are not those guys so that attitude I do not think shows up in stats fully and I am not as excited to watch the team without that.

There was a report that Boston and Charlotte were in talks where Charlotte was offering Naz Reid, Miles Bridges, and picks (we don't know what the picks were). Apparently, Brad was asking for 4 1sts and Charlotte declined.

But would you have taken the deal with 2 1sts? Remember, Bridges was later traded for Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neale and a 2033 1st from PHX.

So, that would have been Reid, Allen, O'Neale, and 3 1sts (plus possible 2nds and/or swaps). I'm sorry, but that sounds like a much better deal. And while I like Robinson, I would have preferred Reid. We could have then something different with the MLE. Those smaller contracts would have been easier to move, as well.

It's laughable at this point. The majority of players waive their trade kickers when they get traded and we couldn't even get that. So now we are going to be struggling to dump contracts at the deadline, likely using the 2nds we just acquired to do so.

Brad is a buffoon. I'm not sure how he's going to come back from this. Every GM in the league is going to smell his fear and desperation. He's just not going to be respected in future trade negotiations after such a major and obvious blunder.
