2026 Red Sox/MLB Season Thread

The Red Sox activated Anthony and Story from the 60-day injured list before Sunday's four-game series finale against the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium.

Catcher Mickey Gasper and infielder Anthony Seigler were optioned to Triple-A Worcester in corresponding moves, creating spots on the 26-man roster for Anthony and Story.

Anthony will bat leadoff as Boston's designated hitter Sunday afternoon while Story will bat eighth and start at shortstop.

I totally get sending Seigler down for Story, but tough break to send Gasper down.  They can bring him back in 10 days, or if there is an injury.  Just for a couple more games for Anthony.  I will say that Anthony has a career 0.836 OPS vs RHP while this season, clearly Gasper's best season ever, by far, he is at 0.828 OPS vs. RHP.  Gasper is a career 0.659 OPS overall and Anthony is 0.804 OPS overall.

I get the move, but it hurts to see Gaper go down while he's still hitting so hot. Hopefully he's back up in 10 days and can pick up where he left off!

I'm so glad we have replay in this game, and it's not sus at all that replay is based in NY!

Mind you, Alonso hit a HR late in a Yankees-Orioles game last week, and it was initially ruled foul and then the call stood despite it being a HR. So rigged for the beloved Yankees

I haven't seen the Alonso HR call, but the Rafaela one was inexcusable. That was a clear catch, I don't know how the replay center can justify not overturning it

That could have gone better, haha.  If you had told me that Anthony and Story would go a combined 4-for-7 I would have felt pretty good, too.

Yeah, we probably still lose the game. We lost it 16-1 lol. But obviously if the game ends in a close 2-1 or 1-0 loss because of that then of course it'd matter. The Orioles actually directly got screwed by that call and lost 5-3 after they somehow still ruled it foul. It's already hard enough, now we have umps/replay screwing people??

Tough series with NYY but in a way, I see it as fitting.  They went into the June series 32-46 and proceeded to sweep 4 games from NYY.  That was the start of a 42-17 run now after loosing 3 of 4 to NYY.  Kind of the beginning and end of a pretty amazing run.  Now they have to grind this out and get in the playoffs and see if they can win a series vs. NYY.

If you were told at the start of the season that Crochet and Anthony would basically be a non-factor the whole season, and injured most of the season, but the Sox were the middle wild card, you would probably take that.  I see NYY as being heavily favored at home for a wild card series, unless Crochet is back, which seems unlikely.  Short series though, anything can happen.

Gasper was brought up to replace him, and hit a solo HR for the Red Sox' first run

Not even being optioned to AAA can stop him

Story gets it done in the bottom of the 10th. What a game. How good must Story feel. And Anthony too. So much for the theory that bringing these guys back would mess with the Mojo.  They were the mojo in this game tonight.

Garrett Crochet has begun playing catch off the mound, the next stage of progression after throwing off flat ground," Cerullo wrote.

"What could I build up to, max? Probably two innings, just looking at the schedule based on when I started throwing and being smart about it," Crochet said.

Now that Anthony and Story are back with impact, now we turn to Crochet.  Two innings?  I will take that.  He can open for Bello.  Probably better than some of the other options to start a game in Yankee Stadium.  Gray Game 1, Tolle Game 2, and then Crochet/Bello?

Getting couple of good innings out of Crochet could really set the tone and then you bring in a righty to turn the line up around (if they had started with some right handed platoons).  Maybe by the time the Sox are in the World Series, Crochet can get up to 3 or 4 innings to start a game.

I agree. I am starting to get a bit worried about the starting rotation, though. A lot of shaky outings lately.
