Breaking: Oklahoma City Thunder star and NBA champion Chet Holmgren has agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year maximum rookie contract extension that could reach $250 million, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN.

Beginning of the end for OKC.

Wonder if they will be doing the same for Jalen Williams. Those guys were from the same draft. Chet was 3rd overall. Jalen was 12th.

Pay him or trade him, because he earned it.

So this is gonna be the trend now? Max your guys and compete for 2-3 years. Then you choose which max guy to keep and who to trade when the taxes pile up? How many chips do you guys think will this OKC core get before the team is forced to break them up?

Are they not able to keep the 3 guys together?

I thought Hartenstein was the cap casualty. And maybe some of the highly paid role players like Dort & Caruso.

Looks like '28-29 would be the year when OKC would have to make hard decisions here so the clock is starting.    Interesting enough, the current CBA runs through '29-30 but there is an opt out after '28-29.

Well it is hard to repeat nowadays at least after 2018. I don't think OKC will win another chip again with this core all said and done. The West is too competitive and OKC now has a bullseye on their rear.

Jalen Williams received nearly 30 painkilling injections in his injured right wrist as the Oklahoma City Thunder were on their way to their first NBA championship. Williams suffered the injury on April 9th when getting tied up with Devin Booker going for a loose ball.

"I got 28 or 29 shots in my hand throughout the playoffs," Williams said on the video. "And I was like, 'That can't be for nothing. We have to win.' So, that was my mentality."

Quote
Williams said it was difficult for him to hear criticism of his performance in the second round of the playoffs when he shot 10-for-43 in Games 4 to 6.

"I didn't want to tell the world that I was hurt, and so the world just ganged up on me about how I wasn't ready for the moment. Which obviously is wrong now," Williams said. "But that was the most annoying thing, because human nature is you want to just scream that you're hurt. But I was able to lock in and not use that as an excuse."

Williams bounced back to score 40 points in Oklahoma City's Game 5 win over the Indiana Pacers.

agreed.  all the 'best shots' teams threw at the C's this past year are going to be aimed at OKC this coming year.  Add in how stacked the West is this coming year and how those teams will see the need to knock OKC down to improve their own chances will result in OKC having a much less successful run next season -- both in season record and in the playoffs without home court all the way through

I read somewhere that he has a handshake deal with GSW and they need to get the Kuminga situation straightened out to determine what they can pay him.  Not sure if that's true.

I read the same but I mean, I don't think the offer changes regardless. It's likely a 1 or 2 year, 5.7M AAV deal regardless.

Depending what happens with Kuminga, the Warriors may not be able to offer $5.7 million because that caps them at the second apron.

Itys what comes with age in his particular context that really matters.  How much more money do you need? What goals do you have that still left  to achieve? How does each potential decision impact your children?s lives? How does each impact your wife?  Are your wife and children lobbying in one direction or another?  What role does concern about how your body will hold up have?  Is an additional year of play worth it if you end up getting hurt?

I think it?s obvious that Al can still contribute so it?s understandable that he?ll want to consider continuing, but do you really want to go through the stress, mentally and physically, of another NBA season?  The answer to that question when you are 25 is obvious, but not so obvious at 39.

if he plays for a team in a place his family wants to live and can get another real shot at a title, then why not?

I think CP3 goes to Phoenix. I think he wants playing time more than he wants a title shot. Reports that he was unhappy coming off the bench in GSW and wants to get a starting job somewhere. He also wants to be on the West Coast close to his family in LA. They said Phoenix is close enough for visits by plane.

I don't think he is that interested in either of the LA teams because of the small role both will ask him to fill. Now maybe if LAC offers him the startin PG instead of Kris Dunn. Maybe that works. Although Beal will want that too. And it sounds like LAC is Beal's #1 choice.
