Mixed feelings about him, to be honest.  I don't like this 'scoop culture' where these people rush to be the first to drop a story even if they don't have all the info.

All that said, he's one of the few insiders who is actually fairly reliable.  He and Shams are really the only two voices worth listening to around free agency or the trade deadline.  So regardless of what I think of his job, there's no denying that he was good at it.

That's really the main thing about him that I liked - that for the most part if he broke something you were pretty sure it was real. He's not one of those types like Stephen A or Chris Broussard or Nick Wright who clearly say things, even if they are wrong or unsubstantiated, just for likes and clicks on social media. I care less about being first and more about being right.

very true. off the top of my head i only remember one case where woj was actually outright wrong (al horford signing or was it hayward??  :)), though i'm sure there are more examples. still, woj and shams are pretty close to gospel in terms of breaking news, at least compared to everything else out there.

Retired before Lebron. Incredible.

I got to be real though, respect to the likes of Woj, Schefter, Shams, Passan, etc. etc. who do this for a living but it's got to be a tough gig. I mean yes, they make millions, but when you read up on some of their stories or interviews, they like barely get sleep and they almost can't because even if breaking news happens at like 2-3 AM they want to be first to it over competitors.

I don't understand this whole "retired from ESPN" narrative, like what the heck is that? Retired from ESPN? He's moving on to another job like just about anyone else that leaves ESPN. Difference he's getting a GM job, instead of another media job...

That year when he got every draft pick ahead of time shows how connected he is.  He had sources at 100% of teams.

Lowe's lay off has me rethinking this. I'm guessing that, like they did with Lowe, they tried to renegotiate his contract lower. And I think Woj was like, "Nah, not worth it."

This with all the other moves makes me think ESPN and Disney in general and in more trouble than meets the eye.

I had wondered the same thing yesterday when I heard the news.

They both certainly have financial challenges but getting rid of older more expensive talent and replacing it with younger less expensive talent is nothing new.  Has anyone ESPN let go really been important from a viewership standpoint?
