50/50 is incredible.  Unbelievable.

Probably a good thing that MLB didn't rush to judgement and blindly suspend him back at the beginning of the season, huh?

One hell of a game for Ohtani tonight:

5-for-5, 2 HRs, 2 doubles, two SBs, 7 RBIs, 3 runs.

He got thrown out at third trying to stretch one of his doubles into a triple. If he made it, he would have hit for the cycle.

Oh, and he's at 50 HR and 50 SB on the season.

I'll nitpick: It's 50 HR and 51 SB.

Incredible season.

Speaking of, is our friend Mo that was pushing that ok? Feel like I have not seen him on the forums in some time (though many including myself are around less during offseason. Hope everything is alright with him.

He added a 3-run HR in the ninth.  Epic.

I wish he had gotten that triple.

Pretty incredible season/night.  I wouldn?t let him pitch again.  Just not worth the wear and tear, and his offense has clearly benefited.
Yup

I don't know.  My top-five would include Ruth, Mays, Williams and Bonds, combining longevity and peak.  There are lots of guys who could be argued for #5.  If we're talking career, though, Ohtani isn't there yet.

may 23, 2002, shawn green went 6 for 6, 4 HR, 19 total bases game is the only one that compares with Ohtani's incredible line, i think.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200205230.shtml

green had 19 total bases that game while ohtani had 17. BUT Ohtani also had the two steals, so maybe they are even.

ohtani and green's games both added about 0.7 WAR just for the one game.  :o

i would say that  either one can be considered the greatest single-game performance in baseball history.

EDIT: the post above has ohtani had 5 fo 5 in that game. he really was 6 for 6.

If MLB only had one MVP (like all of the other major sports), would it be Ohtani or Judge?

Judge has been a markedly better hitter. Ohtani steals more bases. Everything else is Judge. When you look at OPS and OPS+, it?s not close.

And then when you factor in one is a DH and the other is playing CF out of necessity, it shouldn?t be close.

i think the key here is how MVP is being defined. until we know what the definition is throwing names is like trying to hit a moving target.

is it simply numbers? value to a team? does the team have to be in contention or close to it? (that is, can a team with a 12-150 record have an MVP even if the player hit 111 home runs and had other such stats?)

Just so we use our statistics correctly, OPS+ is baselined to the league a player is in (National vs. American), so Judge and Ohtani are not directly comparable by that statistic.
