I'm guessing they will keep the spot open till at least the trade deadline to see what needs they have, and if they don't feel they can find anyone that will move the needle they won't fill it for the sake of it. This is the new environment of the new CBA where nobody wants to get penalized for nice-to-have signings that might not make an impact other than in garbage time or as insurance. Assuming Jaylen gets his supermax (which I think he will) we would have $140m tied up in four players (KP, the Jays, Brogdon) and with signing Banton I think that puts us at $3.4m under the 2nd apron.
From listening to Brad, he seems to disagree with most of us who think we lack depth in bigs (due to KP and Timelord's injury histories and Al's age) or in ball handlers (due to Smartactus's departure and Brogdon's injury history). He actually wants more wings, which is something I think most of us feel we have too much of. So he's seeing something we aren't

so I tried to look at things from his point of view, filling out a depth chart of players who can fulfill the roles that he envisions for players on the court (instead of pigeonholing them as only a power forward, only a point guard, etc):
Ball handlers: White, Brogdon, JT, JB, Payton, Banton
Wings (presumably two way): JT, JB, Brogdon, White, Hauser, Champagnie, Brissett, KP (though defensively he might get exposed on the perimeter)
Bigs: KP, Al, Timelord, Kornet, JT (in a small ball lineup)
Looking at it that way, there is a talent drop off with our wings, especially if you want to give defenses different looks. Curious to see if you guys think I got that depth right or not as well

it might be a stretch to call KP a wing, but he can play on the wing offensively at least. Defensively I think he might have an issue. Same with JT, I read a comment from Joe earlier in the season about how he was considering using JT as a small ball five if he wanted to use such a lineup. White and Brogdon are versatile enough to play on the wing and fill that role and defend other wings I think. Same for JT and JB, Brad specifically mentioned them both as ball handlers who could initiate offense as part of his justification to not replace Smartacus with another ball handler.
