I see it as the worst decision of the entire offseason (outside of the Gobert trade of course).

Brunson is having a career year in New York putting up 24/6/4 on really good efficiency. Getting a guy like that for $25 mill a season is a bargain in todays NBA.

DAL could have Brunson, DFS, and Dinwiddie instead of Kyrie right now. Now they've joined the Kyrie circus, and I don't even like their chances of getting out of the first round this year.

Mavericks have been one of the worst managed teams since winning the title 12 years ago outside of drafting Luka. Pitiful.

Would Brunson still be putting up similar numbers if he stayed in Dallas though? I kind of think having a bigger role in NYK has contributed to him being so good this season

I thought Brunson was tampered with and gone no matter what.

Fair point. Outside of the obvious jump in numbers, I think Brunsons all around game has improved leaps and bounds this season, which would have put the Mavs in a much better position to make it out of the west this year.

They got a better player in Kyrie.

By how much, especially when one considers things like leadership and team basketball? Plus, Dallas parted with a lot of draft capital.

It’s not just a direct comparison between Brunson and Kyrie though.

Kyrie has an opportunity to leave at the end of the season and could flake, contract or not, at anytime.

If Dallas had Brunson, they would have been able to keep DFS and Dinwiddie or ship them out for a different player.  Maybe a Brunson/Doncic/Durant core would have been a possibility.

They should have given him the 4 year extension for 55 million that he wanted.  That was the real mistake.  Last summer was fine.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

I think it could have been. DFS/Dinwiddie/Green/1sts would have been just as good of, if not a better package than what BKN received from the Suns.

How much ? A lot.

Brunson could not be as effective as he is in NY without having the ball in his hands much much more than he would be able to do so in Dallas next to Luka.

It remains to be seen just how good Brunson can be when sharing the ball with legit stars instead of a mediocre cast like he has in NY. He was brilliant in Dallas too when Luka was out but his numbers went way down next to Luka. I believe there is some serious stat-inflation with Brunson in NY right now.

In contrast, Kyrie has shown himself to be very effective next to LeBron, Harden, Durant. Not only is Kyrie more talented but he is the superior fit next to Luka because of Kyrie's elite shooting ability and capacity to play both on and off the ball unlike Brunson who is mostly an on-ball threat (which makes it harder for him to produce at a high level alongside other high level players).

This is correct.  The Mavs bad decision was the off-season before in not extending Brunson when he probably would have taken it.
