Celtics owners Wyc Grousbeck on trade deadline strategy: It's about this year
Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck reinforced the notion while discussing the team’s approach to the upcoming NBA trade deadline with Boston president of basketball operations Brad Stevens. “The conversation that I’ve had with Brad is, it’s about this year,” Grousbeck said Saturday on NBC Sports Boston’s “Celtics Pregame Live.” “It’s not about ‘this will pay dividends in three years’ or ‘this will do this next year.’ It is this year. Muscle up and let’s go get the job done. So that’s his instructions, and that’s what we’re going to try to do. If there’s anything to do, we’ll do it. If not, we love this team. We’re at the top of the league right now.” – via Ricky Doyle @ NESN.com
So about that Fournier TPE that you didn’t want to use…
Apparently there was no way to use it so it would help us "this year."
Also, does Wyc's emphasis on "this year" and not next year mean that he has suggested to Brad to trade Gallo who reportedly can't help us this year?
(Something I doubt Brad would do without being pressured.)
Good point on Gallinari. He isn't going to help us this year. The question is what can we get back for him that will. I am reading between the lines some but to me, I am taking "help this year" to mean someone that helps in the rotation, top 8 or 9, not necessarily someone who is a little better than Jackson or Kornet but not good enough to be in the rotation. You could argue that getting a player a little better than Jackson (say Reddish) is helping the team this year but I am not sure that is what they are trying to do.
The Fournier TPE probably would have been used if we could have gotten back someone who would crack the top 8 or 9. But that would mean including picks, of which we don't have so many to trade. There probably was no deal available to meet the top 8 criteria. But then people wanted to use the TPE to just get a contract that could then be used in another deal later. Is this helping the team now? It could, indirectly, it could also hurt the team. I don't think they viewed a deal that got them say Noel as something that would help the team now. Again, debatable, but to me, understandable.
