Mark Murphy: Marcus Smart on all that trade talk: “Every year my name is in talks, and I’m still here. I’m still the longest tenured Celtic. So I take it as a compliment. It means you’re valued pretty high and if your name is talked about people want you. But I don’t pay much attention.” – via Twitter Murf56
Top Rumors, Trade, Marcus Smart, Boston Celtics

Mark Murphy: Smart on C’s attracting free agents: “We got a bad rep in Boston for (FA’s). This year we opened a lot of eyes to how this team really is. It’s not everybody for themselves. Everybody is for each other, and I think maybe (FA’s think) I can give it a shot in Boston. We’ll see.” – via Twitter Murf56

I’m glad Smart has a good perspective this time around on trade talk.  The extension last summer probably helped.

There is a growing resignation in Dallas, sources say, that the Knicks are indeed Brunson’s top choice and his inevitable destination. More: https://marcstein.substack.com/p/brunson-sweepstakes-just-got-real – via Twitter TheSteinLine

Sucks for Dallas. They are likely going to lose their second best player for nothing. The return for Porzingis wasn’t very good either, IMO. I’m confused as to how Brunson is an UFA after just finishing up his rookie deal with the Mavs, be being restricted… anyone know why that is?
Because Brunson was drafted in the 2nd round.

I guess some 2nd rounders work out...

What’s up with UFA Jalen Smith? Can we get him on the MLE?

Los Angeles Clippers center Ivica Zubac has agreed on a three-year, $33 million extension, his agents Jeff Schwartz and Mike Lindeman of @excelbasketball tell ESPN. The Clippers declined his $7.5M team option for 2022-2023, clearing the way for Zubac's new deal.

Overpay. Zubac is a minimum contract guy.
I think a MLE type contract is fine for Zubac, who is 25, coming off his best season, and producing unglamorous but solid stats.

Noel and Burks to Pistons.  Knicks now have the room for Brunson.

Detroit only got two #2s and cash out of it.

Thank goodness Boston won’t get Burks now.

No, he will resign with the Pacers where he can get more playing time, even if it’s for a little less money.  He’s already ridden the bench in one finals, he doesn’t need to make an extra million or two next year to do that again.

If I’m Dallas about to lose Brunson for nothing, I’m at least going to try to get Fournier back in a sign and trade. Fournier, with his shooting, would be a good complementary player to Luka.

According the Bill Simmons on his last Pod, the Knicks offered the Celtics Fournier for nothing. Celtics passed

Do you feel they are net negatives? I feel noel would get that contract from someone on the open market right now. Less sure on burks but he has a desired skill.

Noel missed most of last season with a plantar fascia injury, for which rest did not seem to heal.  I don’t think he’d get that at all.  If he were healthy, maybe (although I’m not sure given how completely one-dimensional his game is).  But injured, probably not.  Detroit doesn’t care much — I’m sure they waived the physical for the picks — but I’d be pretty surprised if the full MLE were out there for Nerlens this summer.

They be good role players on the Celtics but seem they always hurt esp Noel..so glad we didn’t get them but Detroit are building a decent team esp what they did last 2 seasons in the draft
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

Show me the guys as good as Zubac on minimum money

Drummond. Dwight.

Zubac is a 3rd stringer pretending to be a starter.
Drummond I will concede, but he is on minimum money because his ego will not allow him to play the role he should thrive in nor work on the things he needs to. There's a reason he earned $20+ million a season for 5 years in a row.

Dwight is not as good as Zubac on either end.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

I don't have a great sense of how good Zubac's defense is.  Thoughts?

Productivity wise, 10 points and 9 rebounds in 24 minutes is definitely passable for a starting center.

Ego?  Drummond took minimum to be Embiid's backup even though they had a history of clashing.
