I’m shocked by the tinfoil hats in here, holy moly. I think the refs did a relatively poor job refereeing a physical game that is extremely difficult to ref, but to suggest that the league is rigged over this game is laughable.

How about Tatum shows up? How about avoiding an abysmal third quarter? You’ve got to overcome poorly officiated games to win the title. It’s that simple

Don’t think my hat has too much aluminum in it. I mean we’re discussing a shadily reffed game where the crew chief was the guy Tim Donaghy called for 30 seconds before every game he bet on. I guess you think Jeffrey Epstein offed himself?

It's no secret.

Where is the transparency in the officiating that proves this isn't happening and couldn't happen? If you could see the pregame points of emphasis you could win 80% of your bets on NBA games.

Remember when The NBA was going to release a whole game report for every game but it was clear how bad the refs were?

If the refs weren't run by the NBA and has millions in incentives to make these series go longer it would at least appear to be fairer.

Since Player Association President Chris Paul got fouled out in 22 minutes, maybe VP Grant Williams and Jaylen Brown can give him a call and have the refs be employees of the player association in the next collective bargaining agreement. REfs would answer to the players and have two main goals: prevent injuries and call all fouls fair. Then maybe the NBA would regain a little more respect than the World Wrestling Federation.

They called the foul on Smart the correct call even though their reasoning is different than what the refs said. Refs said it was a sweeping motion shooting contact. On the floor foul. The league said Holiday made contact before starting the shooting motion.

Clearly, they had a result and they needed to come up with a reason to justify the result. Since it was obviously not a sweeping motion foul and Smart was fouled while shooting, the league took that completely out of the equation and said it was a foul on the floor before the shot. Terrible.

I just want to add that I don't think the refs whistle for teams, but for PLAYERS.

They're biased in favour of certain playstyles, and certain players.

On top of that, they're biased for specific GAMES.

That means:
 - certain players get preferential treatment over others
 - certain games need to be won/lost in order to make the league more "fun"

In short; it's all for the sake of entertainment

Not for the sake of finding the best basketball players.

Do you think the best team in the NBA wins the championship each year? If the refs are controlling the outcome of the games and it’s all for entertainment shouldn’t the team with the most popular player be winning regularly. Where’s Lebron? Why is KD on vacation right now. Those are 2 of the 3 most popular players in the NBA.
Quoting Nick from the now locked Ime thread:

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

They let all the contact go leading up to that and then call a touch foul they didn't even see at the time. Nothing to see here.... :o

Stop thinking in absolutes.

No, I don't think the best team wins every single year. Yes I think the best team has the highest chance to win every single year.

And again; I'm not saying anything about teams; I'm talking about players. Just having two players that get preferential treatment doesn't mean you'll win. It means you have a higher chance of getting a bunch of fouls called  in your favour.

Feel free to disagree with that all you want, but stop extrapolating it into nonsense like "OH YoU thINk BeSt teAM wiN?!/1"

.edit: the winner of the NBA championship gets to call themselves the best basketball team in the NBA. Doesn't mean they actually are, realistically. If you don't understand why, I can try and explain it

Yeah, heard the same thing back when Tim Donaghy fixed games.

right not like we do not have a precedent of this in the past. scott foster was on phone with donaghy over 150 times. anyone who thinks they are not favoring/protecting stars like giannis... lebron...kobe.......well................not sure what else to tell you if you have been watching games. it is obvious.

well said. yes they protect STARS to help the NBA favorability and they DO protect the NBA money making machine by calling games certain ways at CERTAIN times to EXTEND series. $$$$$$$$$$$$

WOW JUST WOW. not surprised though.

"What Donaghy did was tip off an old friend about who he believed was the odds-on favorite to win the game based on league mandates about fouls and other violations that would be cracked down upon regarding certain teams and players. It was a success, as Donaghy’s predictions gave the benefactors of his information an 88% success rate. "

"He has been outspoken about his claim that the 2002 Western Conference Finals were purposely extended another game for more league money and more money in the pockets of the referees, and he explained why series’ such as this can dictate the way a game is called."

WOW. exactly what i stated in an earlier post. donaghy backs me up. well there it is.
