Just a poll of curiosity.

If all NBA legends were dropped on a basketball court (in their prime) for the claim all-time greatest 1 v 1 player…who comes out on top?

Obviously this would be a NCAA Tournament like bracket, where the winner moves on, and yes there would be a 3 point line.

*please let me know if I’ve left out anyone of consequence, I am more then happy to add them to the poll.

I believe Wilt Chamberlain in his prime would dominate this tournament. I know he’s many things, including a terrible teammate but IMO he’s in his element playing 1 v 1.

Wilt would be too strong, too athletic and too long.

My initial thoughts immediately went to Shaq or Wilt.

Depends on the rules. No one's guarding Shaq in his prime or probably Wilt. But will there be any advantage to fouling them?  If they have to shoot FT's, then fouling them is an advantage depending on how many times you can do it.

If the games are short enough, Curry can beat anyone on that list shooting only 3's.

Yeah, that crossed my mind. Are we talking winner take out? In that instance, I could see Shaq or Wilt starting off 1-0 then just running the table with their physicality/athleticism.

It really depends on the rules.

Do you shoot to see who gets ball first?

Make it take it, or do you alternate after each point?

Because if you have to shoot to see who gets the ball first and it's make it take it, Shaq and Wilt might not fare so well.

Are shots worth 1 and 2, or 2 and 3?  With shots worth 1 and 2, shots behind the arc are now worth double what a regular shot is worth, verses only 50% more when it's 2's and 3's.  Shifting favor to shooters.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Is there a 8 or 10 second shot clock?  Does the guy with the ball start outside the 3pt line?

I don't think Shaq handled the ball well enough to win it if you're starting outside the 3pt line.

Back in the 70's didn't the NBA have a 1 v 1 tournament that they showed at half time of national game of the week?  I think they may have done it for a season or two.

One thing I know - do it now with current players, allow people to bet on it and you would have one heck of an audience for it. It might even work as a pay per view.

I think it would be someone like Giannis i.e. a guy that is big enough to give the big guys trouble defensively, but also fast enough to give the guards trouble, and a good enough ball handler to be able to score and drive on anyone.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

The brackets would make a huge difference. Who matches up with who?

If we’re using the rules when he played in his prime, once Shaq gets the ball who is stopping him from backing down under the basket and dunking it?

Rules make a big difference but if I think no matter what the rules I would say KD. It has to be a legit quicker scorer with size that can shoot. Second would be Bird, but I think the guards would be too quick for Bird.  Now KD cant stop a shaq or wilt but has the length to make them miss a few shots I think which would be enough to win if he made his shots which he is one of the best to do it. Also has the speed to stop all the quick guards.  Kobe and MJ would be close too but they would have trouble with lengthy guys that are also fast for their size players like Giannis, Lebron or KD. I dont think Giannis and Lebron can shoot well enough to win it. I think you can bait those 2 into taking a few wide open 3's and they miss. i just think other players have ways of stopping a different player. Like Shaq could stop wilt, or giannis would probably give larry some trouble. Theonly player that might be able to shut down KD would be bill russell.

A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals.

Push yourself again and again. Don't give an inch until the final buzzer sounds.

Larry Bird
