I am delighted to see Kemba land in a winning situation in his hometown. Instead of mentoring on a lottery team, he's leading a playoff team with one of the best defenses and one of the best defensive coaches. The 2021-22 Knicks might be a misfit for him. Last season, they overachieved in a condensed schedule getting to the 5th seed, enjoying a stifling defense, great health, and depth last season. The fans, media, and franchise have elevated expectations.
I don't like Kemba and Fournier as #1-3 scoring options, playing Thibodeau starter minutes, giving Thibodeau defensive effort in his coverages, and playing in his ISO offense. Barrett has to emerge as the #1-2 option to elevate this team's ceiling and demote Kemba and Fournier to lesser roles.
In a potential Celtics-Knicks playoff series, we have the 1 or 2 best players, the personnel to match or exceed them defensively, and, with the change in coaching, I think the team will be creating and taking advantage of more mismatches than ever before.
