He isn't worth that contract and I wouldn't have signed him at that price either. Good way to hamstring your team and stay in the wheel of mediocrity
This reflects my thinking also. I am disappointed to lose him but does anyone think that the Knicks are now going to contend for a title with Randle, Fournier, Barrett, and Derrick Rose? To me, that smells like a perennially mediocre team. Is that what people want for the Celtics?
We have Tatum, Brown, Richardson, and Smart. We need some size (PF), not Fournier. We will see how it works out but the play was to take Richardson for far less money and only one year over Fournier. We are not locked in to Richardson the way we would have been if we ponied up for Fournier. Smart is only one year. By not signing Fournier to multiple years, we have the flexibility but we have to do something with that flexibility.
The Celtics need to do things that help them now and don't hamstring them in the future. They have made some pretty big moves, trading Kemba and getting Richardson. Granted these were more financial flexibility moves over talent moves. Good, smart moves, headed in the right direction moves, but for this off season to be a success, in my mind, they need to get a PF.
My name to watch is Gallinari in ATL. I think they will try to move him so they have more money to sign Collins. Thompson is obviously one piece to help but it will require aggregating some of the TPE into players that can then be added to Thompson to get enough salary to take back Gallinari. Another option is Markannen but that would need to be sign and trade (and hard capping). There are not a lot of PF options out there. That is the problem.
