*Trae Young starts sweating*

Quote
Final: Beginning with the 2021-22 season, the NBA will implement new rules to reduce non-basketball moves used to draw fouls, sources tell…

NBA officiating staffs will be trained to identify and properly rule overt non-basketball actions to initiate contact with defender — such as offensive player launches into defender, abruptly veers off path, kicks leg at abnormal angle, or his off-arm hooks defender...

If deemed more than marginal (offensive player's contact impacts the defender's speed, quickness, balance, or rhythm) -- play results in an offensive foul.

A no-call should result -- if the contact is deemed marginal.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

You would think that the effort Trae Young put in the playoffs people would start respecting him a little more. Guess not.

Lol.

You’re right, I don’t respect the ways he foul-baits on defence that is legal in any other basketball league. I respect his playmaking and shot-making, but not that.

almost all nba players push off or arm guard on offense.

Push off calls have become a lot more prevalent. Now players are hooking, initiating the contact once the defender is behind them, and the jumping into defenders while shooting. Young & Harden are the two most high-volume offenders, but Harden has more tricks in his bag than Young IMO.

I was under the impression the referees weren't going to call fouls when players flopped, but that rule didn't seem to last too long. Sadly, the NBA is worse than soccer with flopping. So we'll see how long this new rule will be called.

YES!!!

Amazing rule change. Harden is already an amazing offensive player in terms of court vision, shooting, handles, etc. but (and I’m sure many NBA players will agree with me lol) I am absolutely sick of his off-arm hooks. He digs his arms down to scoop the defenders arms and force a foul during his drives.

Of course I’ll have to see it to believe it but this is a step in the right direction. Bring defense back!!!

The arm hooks infuriate me, especially because they're so obvious!

I hope that this can lead to some actual, concrete change. Just hire the FIBA officials :P

Lol true

But to be fair to NBA officials, usually when there’s a point of emphasis, they have usually followed through. Like protecting jump shooters? Fouls on jump shots everywhere! Technicals for emotional outbursts? T’s we’re called on the smallest things.

The only thing that worries me is that NBA officials are so prone to star treatment. So this rule might change against the Marcus Smart’s of the world, but not the James Hardens.

It would probably help if they called offensive fouls when the defender isn't knocked way back or over.   Falling down may be some NBA defenders only way not to foul out the way they allow offensive players initiate contact

Bad news for Tatum as well with his push off/arm bar move. They called him a lot for it last season. Might be more this season.

Yeah, I feel like we've been here before. Hopefully this change is real. And hopefully players adjust. Because I don't want to see a bunch of offensive fouls either. I'm totally fine with the marginal no-calls as long as they are consistent.
