Not sure either team says no. Or yes for that matter.

I don't think Miami is all that happy with Herro. They love his talent but not his character. Concerns about his off the court lifestyle and work ethic. I believe Herro would be available if offered a good price and I also believe Miami (Pat Riley) would love a player like Marcus Smart. So that may be doable.

Boston is the more likely of the two to say no but they may say yes. Herro is a big talent. He could be a 3rd scoring option behind Jaylen and Tatum. That outside shot-maker that they need to open up the offense some more. There is risk there with Herro's off the court concerns and the consequent uncertainty of him fulfilling his potential ... so, do they give up Smart given uncertainty? Or do they roll the dice based on his talent and youth over Smart?

I see it as a workable trade.

Heat are supposedly looking to trade Herro. He probably doesn't have a lot more trade value than Smart does.

IMO, the Celtics aren't going to trade Smart, they're going to extend him.

Would only consider Herro it if we're playing in a bubble...

the current groupthink that has taken over the blog is that Smart is worthless... ::)

edit:  this comment is not directed at the OP.  Love Dragic...have no idea about the trade really...I wouldn't.  I value Smart more than many here.

I expect Miami to shop Herro around trying to look for that 3rd star. Either in a sign and trade possibility or in a trade for a disgruntled star with whatever other assets Miami can scramble together (outside of Bam & Jimmy).

If that does not work, I could see them trading Herro for a top role player like Smart who fits their culture.

But first they will try to net a star Herro and I could see that working. I could also them possibilly being able to net a borderline star who is not disgruntled (a Wiggins level player).

I definitely feel they got a short at netting a star with Herro -- not because Herro is so good but because when a team has their back up against the wall and the player wants out, they will take what they can get and Herro has some star potential. He is not nothing. He is an interesting young player. Similar in some ways to Oladipo when OKC traded for Paul George. There was talent in Oladipo but it was unclear whether he would ever fulfill it or if he was just a high end role player.

I am actually pretty excited about Miami's offseason - seeing what they are able to do or not do this summer. There is talk of them making a run at Kawhi Leonard. That could be interesting. Some fun things may be on the cards down there with Herro at the center of it.

This trade is hard to evaluate.

Taken as it stands, 1 year of Smart and 1 year of Thompson for 1 year of Dragic and 2 years of Herro, I make the trade.  Not happy about losing Smart but for one year, we are a little better and then we get Herro for 2 years plus the RFA status over Smart being UFA.

Now if your assumption is that we are going to sign Smart to a reasonable contract to keep him, then not so sure.  I like Smart long term over Herro (assume Thompson and Dragic are "one and done" and not figuring into the long term calculation).

I don't know why Miami would do that trade.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Herro regressed some this year in terms of his shooting to  36% from three compared to  39%

https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/herroty01.html

Still better than Marcus's 33% this year.

I still think the HEAT would say NO

I say Ime says no way .   Marcus is the kind  of player he likes ,  practically the only enforcer type emotional guy on the team .

I think he ll put Smart back on the defense track , which is his strength . Not bombing the rim .

Ime will quickly learn about Smart heat check habits.
….in short, Smart thinks of himself as a 2-way player.  He couldn’t be more wrong 😕

What off court concerns do the Heat have regarding Herro? I haven't heard much about that so Im curious. Are they something the Celtics organization would stay away from, or are they fixable things that young guys may do?
