Kidd has cache in Dallas due to his playing days, but I think he has been a terrible head coach. Do not like this hire at all for the Mavs.

I saw this earlier... Weird hiring if they want to keep Luca happy I think. Maybe by the trade deadline he'll want out so bad, we'll be able to get him for Grant and Waiters. LOL

Don't you think Cuban got Luka to bless Kidd as the new head coach?

A player's blessing of a move is overrated.

Players respond to whether a move works out well or not. They do not take responsibility for the decision regardless to whether or not they played a role in making it. They deal with results of the decision. Whether that coach or player succeeded or not and respond to those results.

People care too much about what players want initially and not enough about what makes them happy long term.

Players do not always know what they need. That is why you need strong GMs with vision who can supply the players with the necessary ingredients regardless of whether the player initially approves of those moves or not.

I hate seeing this type of thinking from GMs -- in 2009, Bryan Colangelo was afraid of Bosh leaving so he went out and got him one of his best friends in Jarrett Jack. He thought that would convince Bosh to stay.

NO!!!!

Winning convinces players to stay. Better than anything else. Find a way to improve the team and move it forward. Give the player a reason to stay by showing them you can win a Championship here.

It is not about friends. It is about winning. Be ruthless.

Being buddy-buddy only gets you short term rewards. It does not get you long term loyalty. Winning is the only thing that consistently earns you long term loyalty. Focus on winning. Not buddy-buddy moves or player's blessings.

It is okay to ask a player's opinion but understand it is you -- the GM -- that is solely responsible for the decision at the end of the day. The player accepts no responsibility to the decision regardless of the role he played in it.

And if that decision flat lines, that player will leave you out to hang. He will look after himself first - what is best for his career. He will leave your team if you failed to build well around him regardless of how much you cozzied up to him and/or involved him in decisions. He will be selfish. Trust his selfishness. It will help you (the GM) make better decisions.

So Blazers and Magic still need a coach.  Anyone else?

It’s not overrated, it’s imperative in today’s NBA. That’s why Brad had to consult with Jaylen and Jayson before hiring Ime Udoka. The players run the league now.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Money convinces players to stay.  Winning is secondary until maybe after the player has made a ton of money.  In any case, Luka isn't going anywhere for a long time unless the Mavs decide to move him.

I wouldn't ask a star's opinion on who they want as coach.  If you go in a different direction, you can be perceived as ignoring their opinion.  I'd just let him know who is the likely choice and see if he raises any significant objections.  You definitely don't want the star player having a negative opinion of your new coach right off the bat.

You think Stevens is doing the right move in asking Tatum, Brown and Smart about their choice for Head Coach?

Asking their opinion is fine.

Strictly following their opinion is not.

At the end of the day, the GM makes the decision and he is the one that lives with the consequences of those decisions. He is better off accepting that than going with consensus / approval of others.

This isn't an NBA thing.  If you are hiring a manager for your staff, and you respect that staff, it's not a bad idea to let them have a voice in the process.  You're much more likely to make a better hire.  I've been involved with multiple organizations where this has occurred, as well as some where it hasn't.  The manager/staff relationship has been much stronger when a voice in the selection process was given to the staff.

Yes, I like that. Maintain control of the situation but create an avenue for the player to voice his thoughts if he has concerns. Very good.

I am less concerned about a player having a negative view of a coach initially. It is not the first impression that matters most. It is the final one.

You see players who doubt coaches initially but come around to liking a coach over time when they see that he knows what he is doing. It is a coach's talent that creates trust. That this guy (coach) is good for me the player and us the team. That he adds to our group. And it is not until a player sees a coach day in day out that he makes his true judgement on that.

Sounds like our front office could've used this logic as well
