I've wanted Carlyle back in Boston for a long time but I'm happy with Udoka.
I would've preferred Carlisle cause he is a known entity. I am happy with Udoka as one of the top candidates amongst the unknown entities. He is a terrific coaching candidate.

However, Carlisle is a proven terrific coach. One of the best in the business. I would only take that risk on unknown coach (first time coach) if a top coach was unavailable. I prefer taking a risk an unknown exciting coach over a middle of the pack mediocre coach but not over a top drawer coach which Carlisle is.

Exactly why I was furious with the Udoka hiring.

I get that. I sometimes think Carlisle is maybe the best coach in the league but he never had a consistent roster so his record isn't as good as it should be. His teams always seem to overachieve, though. I mean, look at the Dallas team that won in '11. How many coaches win with that roster?

On the other hand, I've fully talked myself into loving Udoka.  ;D

In a vacuum I'd agree, but there are other risks involved besides whether a coach is good or not (coaching). The potential type of risks Carlisle may bring with him not sure if I'd take them, in particular if it has a possibility of alienating your core players.

That aside, do we know what contract Udoka agreed to?

I’d love Carsisle but he can’t be here. Look at the response his hiring got. There was a lot of looking down on the organization for not interviewing coaches of color. Meanwhile, people are congratulating Jason Kidd. It’s ridiculous but it’s just the way it is. Too many people believe nonsense from the Kyrie’s of the world.

Exactly right, it's truely the age of misinformation. People like Jay Williams & Irving perpetuating a drawn out stereotype for their own personal narrative or pure ignorance.

Personally, Udoka sounds like a great hire but who knows how he will perform as a head coach, there have been many Pop disciples who have failed in the past. I too would rather Rick Carlisle as our head coach and Sam Presti as our general manager based on known results and connections to the city.

I dislike the notion that NBA needs more (insert background), purely because that in itself is racism. To hire someone just because of their color is the definition of racism, and I am sure most black aspiring coaches wouldn't want the job to begin with if they were a diversity hire.

Perhaps the league should invest in programs to help assist people in poorer areas who aspire to become an NBA coach and I do not doubt that some college basketball programs in the United States do have a racist nature to their hiring practices, but this isn't something the Celtics should be lumped into because their previous head coach and general manager were white.

Back to Indiana.

One of the underrated What-Ifs of NBA history is what happens if the Malice at the Palace never happens? The Pacers won 61 games in '04. They started the '05 season 7-2 including what was kind of a statement game against the defending champion Pistons before that fight broke out.

Maybe that Indy team was too combustible and never would've worked out but if they could've kept it together who knows how far they could've gotten.

Ron Artest would potentially be in the HoF if it never happened. Was on the path to perennial All-NBA calibre
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

I 100% agree.

On the other hand, maybe the Malice is the event that finally forced him to get some help and get his head straight. Maybe without it, he does something worse later that derails his career more.

It could've gone any number of ways with him.

We can interview coaches of colour and still hire Carlisle, the two things aren't mutually exclusive.

That sounds like the NFL’s model to a T.

I know nothing about American football, but a model that interviews all possible candidates while making the best hire based on merit and qualifications sounds fantastic to me.

NFL teams are basically forced to interview candidates of color.
