Washburn asking Brad if he's going to limit playing time if players aren't playing hard and Brad doesn't answer and gives the Hornets credit. Blab, blab, blab. I'm tuning Brad out....

For all the complaints about Stevens, you know what he didn't do?

He didn't shoot 38% from the field.
He didn't missed close to 20 shots at the rim.
He didn't decide to go iso all game
He didn't turn the ball over 13 times.
He didn't decide not to get back in transition.
He didn't allow Charlotte to shoot wide open threes all game.
He didn't play some of the most pathetic half court defense all year in this game.

At some point, it's on the players, not the coach. This game was all on the players. They were the ones that decided not to show up and stink up the joint.

What exactly is the coach’s job?
It's not to play the game.

Not play guys who play hard and bench guys that are phoning it in or get a tech to fire up his team or rem a guy out for horrid lazy play. See Pop! Coaching is an active participation job! Not sit and hope guys do something.
Sure. Yeah. Let's bench Tatum, Brown, Kemba and Smart because a lineup of Pritchard, Besmith, Langford, Parker and Kornet are going to win sooooooooo many games.  ::) ::) ::) ::)

It may be the spark and change of pace you need during a game.
ha ha ha...if CBS ran this line up out during real game time this place would demand his head....again....as usual.  ;D

Not if they produce and take the other team out of their flow.

I can take the loss if the team at least plays hard. We have guys that play hard every minute they are on the floor and none of them are "Starters".

I can agree with this.  I was just thinking about how fun those early Brad Stevens teams were to watch, just before and during IT's time here.  We didn't have great players, but they played HARD and hustled.  This team, I have missed the last two games almost entirely, and I am almost glad.  I can't stand to see our guys just going through the motions, not giving 100% every night.  I guess that is the NBA these days, but it isn't what the CELTICS are about.

Can the Celtics players just make an announcement before the game that they aren't playing hard?

Rose calling out Stevens on the post-game saying it's a failing of his that he can't get his guys to consistently play hard.

Let's face facts, Stevens is never going to be the guy to light a fire under these guys. It's never going to happen.

I know that they say it's not the coach's responsibility to motivate pro athletes, but I think it def helps. Unfortunately our main guys are not as self motivated as IT and Horford.

It's like having Mr. Rogers as your coach. You're just never going to respect him as an authority figure.

Exactly.

But it's exactly the role and responsibility of the coach to motivate and get his guys to play hard. That is an integral part of his job description.

It's become increasingly clear over recent seasons that our best players don't buy into whatever Brad supposedly is selling.  Beyond the lack of effort is an unwillingness to trust each other and move the ball.  That starts with our best players.

Brad needs to take a page out of Popovich's book and be toughest on your best players.  When you're holding your best players accountable then everyone else falls in line.  Brad doesn't seem to have the respect of our players.  In a game like this, that means benching Tatum for his awful, selfish play.

I don't care what our players say to the media.  Just look at the way they play and the results that follow.  Lack of communication and poor defensive effort.  Stupid, undisciplined offense with lots of iso ball.  It's why Smart and Tatum have been able to launch away terrible early shot clock 3's all season with little regard.  There's no accountability.

TP. Exactly this. Brad's philosophy is just clearly not landing on these guys, and it's probably no coincidence that this became super apparent after both (a) we lost our strong vet leader in Horford, and (b) Tatum and Brown made leaps into superstardom. It's painfully obvious that they have tuned him out and don't respect him, and I think it all boils down to Brad's passivity and soft nature that doesn't instill any character or accountability in his team.

That Sherman Douglas team was fun and played hard. I've watched a lot of less talented Celtics teams and wasn't half as frustrated as this. Where's the team leader calling out the effort? There's no leader on this team. I wanna heard someone come out and question the teams heart. I wish we had a player like Perk on the team.

Odd thing is Brad is actually impeding the growth of these young players who actually crave direction and development.

Also completely agree.

Though more and more I realize that a lot of that was not Brad's doing. Rather, that was the inherent competitive and self-interested nature of IT, Smart, AB, Crowder, etc., all of who were playing with chips on their shoulder trying to prove something (i.e. that they are better than where they were drafted, deserving of a big contract, deserve to be in this league, etc.).

You would think it would be Smart & Jaylen, but we have no idea who is saying what inside the locker room.  Maybe this team is too fragile mentally to get called out in the media by a team mate?

I loved IT's "King in the Fourth" season.  That was one of the most fun seasons I've ever watched.  Even though that team wasn't championship caliber there was just a lot to enjoy about that team.  I had faith in Brad back then.  Even some of our rebuilding seasons were a lot of fun.  A lot of it boils down to expectations... but I didn't think that this years team was of championship caliber by any means and it still has been one disappointing and unenjoyable year.

See what happened when Perk called em out and some rent a coach had the audacity to push back? These stars go to their rent-a-coach and do not learn any TEAM skills.

Grant Williams had a good game but wasn't what we needed from a center in this game. We needed to control the paint and he was just too undersized to do that. I was so glad to get some size on this roster but if Brad won't play it, then it doesn't matter. I wonder if Danny trades Theis if he thought Brad would with a smaller center.

Maybe the Celtics are on strike,  want better benefits or something ?
