If Belichick gets to 11-6 or 12-5, does he get another Coach of the Year award?
Also, is Coach Belichick gets the team to 11-6 or 12-5, what does that say about how great a job GM Belichick has done? Especially the two excellent drafts the last couple years?
I think 11-6 is possible, which would be incredible with a rookie QB. Have to say though, the only victory that was impressive had to be the game vs the Chargers in LA. They haven’t beat any other good teams. Tennessee will be a good test even without Derrick Henry and then they have the 2 games against Buffalo. The defense is looking good, the run game is solid and Mac has been improving each week. Still worry about the WR’s though. Hunter Henry is the only reliable option and the two highest paid skill players in Jonnu Smith and Nelson Agholor have been big disappointments thus far. That’s $24M worth of contract with very little production.
The receivers/TEs have been above average IMO. Not a ton of separation but an accurate QB and good hands. Smith’s been much more involved as the season’s progressed (of course didn’t play yesterday). Bourne, Meyers, and Agholor have been solid receivers and Bolden (in particular) has been a spark catching balls out of the backfield. They are missing a top flight #1 receiver/ they don’t have a guy who can’t separate downfield, but going into the season we knew they had a handful of #2/3’s and that’s what they’ve been.
Free agent Matt Judon is playing like DPOY candidate. Van Noy and Jamie Collins and Jalen Mills return values have been well over what they have been paid.
Like I said, defense has looked good. It’s just the 2 biggest FA signings on the offense have not been producing. That’s $24M a year in salary giving you very little output. That’s a ton of money.
It really seems to me that you are expecting perfection. Not every play called will be a success. Not every game played. Nor every draft pick picked. Nor every free agent signed.
The Pats have had great performances above to ridiculously above paid value from almost all their free agent pickups this offseason. Two players, not so much. That happens.
And their money really isn't a lot in the total scheme of things. It's $24 million but just $12.5 million cap number against a $200 million cap. And, neither the season nor their contracts are over to judge those contracts completely.
Fact is, the free agency of the Pats, as a whole, has been a tremendous success and will look even better when the cap explodes over the next couple years
