Nesmith is making me feel better about no Bane!

Yes

But Celts could of had Nesmith, Pritchard and Bane

How does that make you feel?  ;D

I’d still rather have Tillman.
It really beats me up seeing how solid he is. Kills me!
Tillman is almost a full year older than Langford.  The guys that stay in school longer are just better prepared for the league.  It is why Bane, Pritchard, and Tillman are all playing fairly well.  But those guys often don't have near the career arc as players that are much younger.  The younger guys certainly have more bust potential, but also are far more likely to reach much higher levels.  This has been shown time and time again throughout league history.  For the role players and the all time greats.  The younger you are, the more you grow each year, and you often eclipse the guys that start off with the higher floor.  The simple reality is, if Bane, Pritchard, and Tillman were better players when they were younger they never would have stayed in school as long as they did.  I think that says all you need to know.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I haven’t watched Tillman play, but his stat lines don’t suggest he’s  special. Only earning 18.6 minutes a game on a team with a depleted front line, 6.6 points and 4.3 boards.

I can see why people would like to have Bane’s production, but what do you see in Tillman?

He’s just a solid role player at a position of need.  High motor, high BBIQ. 7/4 in 18 minutes is better than the 4/3 in 18 minutes we get from GW.

Neither Tilman nor Bane will be special.  We could use Tilman more than Bane right now.

That’s essentially my point. We were inches away from a Finals berth last year and had an exodus of talent - I would have been very happy to try and pick high-floor guys. We seemingly did anyway, but Tillman is already better than Grant, Tacko and Kornet.

Why do people keep making posts like this, honestly?

Among those the 45 guys taken in the draft (positions #16 - #60) you're probably lucky to find 5 guys who one day become decent starters in the NBA.  The guys drafted there are either high risk / high reward or else they are seen as fairly one dimensional players with minimal upside, so finding a good player in that group is like finding a needle in a haystack.

So it's unbelievably illogical to say things like: "Danny made a mistake he should have drafted [Player X] at #28".

Danny didn't make a mistake.  He had a large group of players he could choose from, all of whom had an extremely high probability of being absolute busts.  In the end by fluke Bane turned out better then 29 teams thought he would be.  Grizzlies got lucky.  That's it.

Ainge recently drafted Payton Pritchard and Robert Williams in the late 20s and both have looked like complete steals at those positions.  He's done better there then most...

We picked Bane and traded him for two-second rounders and he scored 22 tonight and had 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Bane and Pritchard were the two guys I wanted and these what-if threads are part of any sports blog. I'm happy with Pritchard and Nesmith but I would've loved to have Bane too! Always nice to have a 44% three-point shooter coming off the bench!

Somewhat of a tangent, but I feel quite vindicated by how strong the 2020 draft was for role players, as I said it would be. From the first round there are only four players not playing 10+ minutes a night - Jalen Smith, Zeke Nnaji, Leandro Bolmaro and Udoka Azubuike. Three project big men and a Euro stash.

That seems like a pretty solid number for a draft that was heralded as the worst since Anthony Bennett was the #1 pick.

I think Bane could have helped us, his production was and is better than some of bench guys.   That is not debatable.

And he also drafted Grant Williams and Fab Melo in the 20s so its a toss up.

On the other hand, there appears to be zero generational stars, zero future top 10 type guys, possibly only one All-NBA type guy and maybe 2 All-Star types.....maybe.

Yes, a whole bunch of role players, but as a total draft, devoid of real top end talent, it makes it a bad overall draft, as I thought. Drafts aren't usually judged by how many role players it creates. The are judged by how many stars it creates.

So in that way, I feel vindicated.😁

I agree there's no Zion or Luka in the bunch, and it probably wasn't a loaded draft like 2011, with seven future all-stars.

But I think you're underselling the top end a little. I'd say Edwards and Ball are likely to be all-stars at some point - they both show talent that could get them there multiple times. Haliburton seems a notch lower, more of a maybe, but to play this well at 19, to me shows enough to raise the question. With others it's just too early to tell; many players who get to all-star take a year or two to put things together.  (When Nesmith turns into Ray Allen with better defense maybe we'll say it was a great draft.  8))

Everyone knew this draft was deep in role players.

Were people fighting you on that? The draft's reputation was extremely weak at the top with good role players available into the 20s. It's why people thought Boston might actually be able to trade up into the top 10 because the top 10 was weaker than usual and 10-30 was stronger than usual.

Not to be mean but I can't believe how much depth of discussion about a role-player (albeit one with potential). Bane was a favourite late pick of mine too, alone with Tillman and Tillie but they are all still rookie role players. They wouldn't win us a championship nor land us a superstar in a trade. I don't think I've seen a thread about a Celtic player with this type of length and depth lol. I am afraid the next time I check this thread there is going to be a report on his 'weekend festivities'.

This is true.   But on the other hand their better than what we have coming off the bench in many cases.  They have clearly defined skills sets that can help a team.
