Say you could get

Harrison Barnes for one of Romeo or Nesmith plus our 2021 first round pick

John Collins for Smart plus our 2021 first round pick

Jerami Grant for Smart, plus Romeo and/or Nesmith, plus multiple first round picks

I think that is a good indication of the relative values each of these guys would have in the trade market. I introduce Grant because Scal has been targeting him a lot lately in trade ideas.

Under those circumstances, which one of these trades would you be most interested in making?

I rank in this order:

Grant
Barnes
Collins

I think Grant would be perfect for our power forward position. I realize it is a stretch, he is playing so well, but that is why I put in a pretty compelling trade package for him. I'd add other players, although my untouchables are Jayson, Jaylen, Pritchard and RW3.

Barnes would be a cheaper alternative. A step down in talent, but probably very comfortable playing role of 3rd or 4th wheel. A good replacement for Hayward, really.

Collins to me is a guy who can produce good numbers, but I worry about resigning him. And I also just don't like the fit defensively; he plays more like a small ball center than a switchable power forward like Grant. Frankly I feel Barnes is a better fit, and should cost less too, thank Collins.

I wouldn't throw such a package at Jerami Grant. He's in the midst of a freakish breakout year on a bottom-feeding Detroit team where he's the number one option. We already know what he is as the 3rd/4th option from his Denver days - a nifty versatile two-way forward.

Collins is a walking double-double with high efficiency in his early 20s, and Harrison Barnes is a similarly talented forward to Grant except he's better suited off the ball and has championship experience.

My order would be:

1. Collins
2. Barnes
3. Grant

I'll take any of the three that a deal can be closed on for the least value possible. That's probably Barnes. I don't see Detroit trading Grant for anything other than Brown or Tatum, and I think way more teams can offer way more for Collins than the Celtics, and will, so see Collins as unattainable.

Barnes is my choice. I would prefer to keep Smart and I like that Barnes is under contract for another 2 years at about $20M/year. He has been a solid consistent player for a number of teams. Good fit to be the Cs next PF and move Tatum to SF.

I think the Celtics need to add a useable player that could close on the team without subtracting one.

Therefor, Barnes would be on the top of my list.

I think Grant would be the best of the 3 by a mile. It isn't close. He's 26, on a nice contract, he's 6'8 with a 7'3 wingspan and the best defender of the bunch by a significant margin. It would be amazing to watch him on the floor with Tatum and Brown.

That being said, I'm not sure what the calculations are to get one of these guys. Collins seems the one that is gettable but most likely to be unhappy and most difficult to keep financially. I'm not sure anyone knows how tough it would be to pry either Grant or Barnes from their current teams.

If we knew Collins would sign and be happy here, any of these three would be a huge improvement.

I agree. After reviewing Collins a little more carefully, I'm not in favor of giving up big assets for him, then paying him a max level contract. He's a very good player, but I don't see him immediately making us Champ contenders.

Barnes is more a more attractive on: what it takes to fetch him, and the long term commitment / expenditure. Allows the Cs to live to fight another day on trades, S&Ts, etc.

Grant is my first rank and it's not even close. He fits the system and is signed on a good deal. Showed ability to switch, playing and defending three positions at a moderate level.

Doubt he gets dealt even for Smart, Nesmith and a pair of first. He seems like a core piece for a team that will be in decent cap relief going into his last year. And with decent young prospects Pistons could make a deal this offseason to pair a elite player with him.

Collins is second. He is good talent and probably worth a JB contract to a max contract by current standards. He has potential and if he is available now go get him. Much like Myles Turner he might get better and become even more pricey.

Barnes I have last because he doesn't seem like a piece that puts you into the finals nor does he have the upside potential of Grant or Collins.

Not really in favor of trading for Barnes. He is a good player, but has limited upside and makes a ton of money. I suppose if we can dump Thompson (gets us under the tax) and it only costs a 1st, I would go for it, but not sure he is the guy to take us over the top.

Of the other two guys, I would prefer Grant, but realize he would come at a premium (this past offseason was the time to go after him - too late now). That leaves Collins. He makes sense as he can play both big positions, has range, can be relied upon consistently for big points when needed, and still has upside potential. I'd hate to give up Smart, but also don't want to be paying Smart ~$25M/yr in 2022. Reluctantly I give up Smart and a 1st, but would want Dunn back (as proposed in Roy's deal).

That price for Grant is a little too high for me. He's having a good year, but I'm not sold on his role on a good team.

For the price, I'd take Barnes but I'd also look to unload Kemba for salary flexibility going forward. Note that Barnes has a decreasing salary for the next two years.

I wouldn't want to trade Smart for Collins given what that leaves us for guards with the need to still figure out what to do with Kemba.

It’s pretty unlikely Grant gets traded considering he willingly went to Detroit with the idea of being “the guy” on that team.

Barnes would be a good fit. A little older than the Js but solid veteran guy. He’s not great at any one skill but is dependable. I’m going to assume he’ll generate a decent amount of interest from other teams as well for the same reasons.

Collins is a talented young player with upside still. He’s due for a new contract and he will be more expensive as he’s a big man that can space the floor. I personally like him and think he’d be a good fit on this team. Has the same timeline as the Js and you’d be paying for future production in his next contract as opposed to paying for past production.
