One of the worst efforts by a professional athlete I have ever seen yesterday.  Scal says running in mud.  I say not running actually jogging. After a day off. Such talent but when things are not going right he can sulk like a loser.  How many times have you ever seen him dive on the floor after a loose ball?  Where is the fire? He left Brown and Walker out to dry. And of course he is so important to the team there will be no accountability.  If it's his team it is time to act like it.  That wasn't that he did not have his legs. That was low energy Jason Tatum.

Tatum's demeanor has always / continues to make me nervous. He has a sort of an arrogance / disinterest about his body language and actual language.

I alway said that he usually don’t have the fire in him like a Bird, Kobe, Jordan to take him to elite status
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

Didnt he sprain or dislocate a finger trying to dive for a ball a few years ago. Since then I havent seen him ever dive for a loose ball.  I dont remember him getting a tough O board or taking a charge

Thats the one bad thing about Tatum. He plays pretty boy /finesse basketball most of the time

He basically came back from having covid and got thrown into playing 38-40 mins per game. Not including yesterday's 23 minute outing, he's been averaging over 38 minutes per game this month. I know it's crazy, but he just might tired and we don't know how covid is going to affect athletes moving forward.

He probably does deserve some leeway for just coming back from an illness that affects your ability to exert yourself.

That said, even before he was out with covid, I was frustrating by his seemingly going back to a style of play that ignored getting to the free throw line. I had hoped that last year's playoffs were a light bulb moment for him in terms of getting to the line but it's looking more like a flash in the pan.

It is crazy.  The man is 22 years old and a great athlete.

He's averaging nearly 6 free throw attempts per game this month which would be a career high - he's actually been steadily increasing his attempts since the season started. So it seems he's trying to get there more. Would also be nice if he got a few more calls every now and then.

We just a saw a college athlete collapse on the court after having Covid and being cleared to return to play. Jimmy Butler lost 10 pounds during his bout with it. Karl Anthony Towns said he has been dealing with after effects.

I was waiting for this thread. I was thoroughly surprised by the lack of criticism towards Tatum for his performance in the game threads because I thought he played possibly his worse game in a couple years.

I worry that the condensed schedule and after effects of Covid could be affecting him in a bad way. I know about a month after my Covid illness, I had a sudden onset of after effects that affected me to the point of needing to shut down any physical exertion for a few months. Yes, I'm 55 and he is 23 but this disease affects different people differently. Not all young guys come away with just a mild case.

Hope he is okay and just needs a rest day like JB got a week ago. Or maybe he just had "one of those days" and he is his usual self next game. Let's hope so.

That's a good point. There's reason for optimism.

He's still only at 4.5 for the season after taking more than 7 per game in the playoffs. But if you're right and the upward trend continues, I'll be happy.

While we are on the topic, this appears to be a wider problem. Consistent effort from Brown, Theis, Walker and Smart, but everybody else does not appear reliably locked in.

Semi was given an opportunity to win the starting PF job. He gets a start a couple of games ago, and his teammates get him the ball and he has a career game. He was horrendous yesterday. It was as if he hadn't played in 6 months. That is just not competitive.

I think the real problem is that the league needs to stop scheduling the Celtics for Sunday early afternoon games.  ;)

The Celtics truly do have an early in the day game issue. I don't want to do the research, but I can not remember the last time they looked even half decent during a day game.

Tatum's demeanor has always / continues to make me nervous. He has a sort of an arrogance / disinterest about his body language and actual language.

Me too but I have grown to look past this as time has moved on. Tatum continues to rise to the occasion in big games and in the playoffs. He gets more aggressive in tough situations.

Ever so often I still get nervous about him. Whether it these mentality concerns listed here or his mentality focus on scoring while sleepwalking other parts of the game (passing, defense, rebounding). But he always snaps out of it and gets back to playing well-rounded team basketball. So I try to remind myself of that and not panic when he goes through a bad moment.

Dude is earning a reputation as a slow starter to the season as well. Another nerve-wrecking feature of him / his mentality.

But he comes through ... time and time again.

So he has earned a level of trust that problems are temporary and he will solve / fix them as the season moves on.
