Thompson is a pretty good individual defender but he's not a rim protector.  Once the Pistons beat their initial man off the dribble, it's an easy bucket. 

I think that's probably the logic behind playing Thompson with Theis - hoping that Theis could provide the weakside help that Thompson doesn't.  But that A) hasn't worked so far and B) has really hurt the offense.
