With Hayward out,  is it automatic that Smart starts?

Celts did start Smart in the playoffs after Hayward went down. But reality was there wasn't a solid option to replace Hayward on the starting unit.

With Smart starting, the team saw a dip in bench production and energy.

Fast forward to start of next season with a deeper bench in theory...  Do you think Smart should start??

If you voted "yes" to have Smart come off the bench.  Who are you starting instead?

My option might be a few weeks in the making, but Romeo.  He's already proven a defender and had taken on more minutes prior to getting hurt.

Walker/Romeo/Brown/Tatum/TT

I'd prefer him off the bench since that's how he seems to be the most effective -- going up against the other team's starting PG when they're getting tired and/or going against the other team's backup PG who is typically going to have fits dealing with Marcus' defense.

that being said, we don't have a clear option to replace Hayward in the starting line-up at this time if it's not going to be Smart.  TT and Teague were not signed to replace Hayward as starters.  The young guys are well, young.  My best guess for who might start in place of Hayward other than Smart may be GWill depending on what he shows in camp and preseason.  He's an intelligent player, adds some beef to the lineup and if he can show he's improved from 3 this year, he could provide a solid 4th option in the starting unit.  he won't be that 4th threat to put up over 20 on a given night like we had with Hayward but he could provide solid minutes as a starter.  question is who takes his spot off the bench since yet again we don't have a good vet PF we can throw in that spot that can rebound and score.

To start the year it should 100% be Smart. Hopefully one of the #14 picks (or Grant, I guess) make a big enough leap to earn the spot, though. I like Smart more coming off the bench (provided there's an okay player starting over him)

That would also mean that there's less of a let down when/if Kemba misses games
I'm bitter.

I think a lot depends on JTs ability to run the second unit offense and Kemba's knee. I see a lot of Kemba, Smart lineups to help the defense if JT can keep the offense moving.

Not a bad idea

But Grant and TT  at the 4 and 5 or Grant and Theis, doesnt seem like a great froncourt pairing

Grant and Timelord on the other hand has looked good in the past

I hope not tbh

JT and Brown need to rest more next season. At times I want both to rest together

Team relies too much on these two. Players need to learn to be more independent

I also want to avoid JT getting a big head. Start turning into Harden.  He should not be jacking any more shots than he did last season. And even then I thought it was a few too many

Grant and TT could work out where TT is able to provide that backline of defense and rebounding to help GWill in that regard.  TT's offense is more the issue and Grant's ability to hit the 3 could give TT more room to pick up offensive boards.  GWill with Theis hurts because of Theis' difficulty controlling the defensive boards.  Same goes for Gwill with Timelord.  While Timelord does provide shot blocking, his team defense still needs a lot of work and he's a mediocre rebounder currently (mostly when he's out of position having gone for a block instead of sticking with his man and boxing out).

I will be amazed if he isn't starting. He's clearly the most qualified candidate. They're not going to have Teague or Romeo start over him.

Starter =  no quality replacement for Smart as a starter so Smart should start. I am happy to bring him off the bench if there was someone solid and dependable on the wing who could start there but there isn't such a player on this roster.

Smart should absolutely start, especially if Kemba is out. But even if Walker was healthy, I think our best lineup is with Smart out there.

The two ways I can see this not becoming a reality is if:
1. Grant Williams makes a leap in year 2 and becomes a legit starting 4. It’s a fairly unlikely outcome but it’s possible
2. Nesmith is ready from the get-go, similar to how Tatum was his rookie year. This also seems unlikely but we can hope

If we use the TPE for a starting quality SF, PF or C, then I'd really like to see Smart off the bench.

Heck, I'd even like to see him on the bench and start Grant alongside Thompson. Won't happen, but I'd like it
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

Smart will probably start, but our team would be better if he didn't.

Our team would be better if we had another player (preferably a big or a hybrid wing/big) who was good enough to start but we don't so Smart will start and be a core part of the opening and closing unit.  There is no need to shoe horn in someone like Langford or GWilliams.  I don't expect that kind of improvement from either, at least not this year.  Ojeleye is more likely (but still very unlikely) to make the leap in my mind and it is hard to say with Nesmith but I don't see it.  With Nesmith, the question is whether he will show enough to be a regular off the bench, even that would be a surprise to me.  Hoping he may be a starter is probably getting way ahead of ourselves.

Y'all are talking about different JTs.
