Pacers GM states that he was probably overplaying his hand? To try to obtain a special player

What does this cryptic comment mean?

He though he was adding extra to the package?  Or he was being tight?

I dont get it

I'm having trouble understanding what the incentive was for Ainge to do that deal instead of what he was able to do with Tristan Thompson and Teague. Why take a net negative outcome?

Pelicans had him under control for another year, so they were in a stronger negotiating position.  Danny only had Gordon's Bird rights.

Danny Ainge has to do what he feels is right for the Celtics no matter what.

But most NBA followers will agree with Kevin Prichard (Indiana GM) that Danny Ainge had unrealistic demands and squashed a fine deal for all involved parties by being too greedy.

Biggest perceived weakness on your Conference Finals team is the center position and then you get the chance to get a young starting center on a multi-year-contract back in a deal for a player you'll lose otherwise to another franchise anyway.

Maybe Ainge is the smartest guy in the room in the end, but right now he looks like an idiot to many NBA fans and I think some GM's and agents also are a bit perplexed.

I dont get it
The quote is overplaying in the trade.  He clearly means that he thinks he was offering more than he really should have or at least that's what he wants the Pacers fan base to think.

Ok so if we assume that turner and McDermott could have been rerouted to a third team for a lightly protected first and second we would have had the picks plus a $25m tpe.
Now we have neither. I understand Pritchard being ticked off by Danny. I assume Danny thought he negotiated from a position of strength so he was thought a lesson.
I also hope this shows Danny’s fanboys on here that he is quite often delusional in trade negotiations

Just because some fans think the center position is the biggest weakness that doesn't mean Danny agrees.  Even if he does agree, he may not feel Turner is the solution.  I certainly don't think he is. 

As for our biggest weakness, I'd say it is our tendency to settle for chucking 3 point shots.  We looked really good when we played inside out.

I mean, oops, I misread the OP. I'm pretty sure that the quote should have been "overpaying," not "overplaying." Originally, it sounded like the Indy GM was saying that he was misplaying his own hand.

Perhaps Danny tried to gauge interest from a third team ... no bite/interest at this time

It didn’t really have anything to do with Danny in the end. Gordon got paid more and took the money. Regardless of what Danny offered or didn’t, Hayward would still be a hornet.

What don’t people get about this?
