Watching the Senate debate the ACB nomination and the recent discussion by KK about third party candidates got me thinking that we may have elected our first third party candidate without aknowledging it. The truth is DJT does not or did not belong to a politcial party before he decided to run for president. What he did was take over a  movement and then did what you need to win - hijack one of the established political parties. Much to his credit DJT did not join a party and conform to the mores of that party he took over a party and bent them to his will. He ran against a 20 person field of Republicans, took them on,, and beat them to a pulp. The overrun of the party was so complete that you had to make a choice to remain in the party or leave the party. Some have left, those who stayed bend to his authority, and some have just elected to work behind the scenes to undermine him. So all credit to DJT as the first 3rd party independent president since the advent of teh two party system.

So to KK and other 'independents' that is how you do it. Get a movement going, and hijack one of the viable parties. Heck Bernie Sanders almost did it with the Dems - ALMOST. So there is a way as shown by DJT and Bernie.

No one really thinks DJT is a Republican, do you? He pretty much just overran that party. This of what he did to Rubio, Bush, Graham, Santorum, Romney, and all the other heavyweights in that party. He was no politician. He looked at the nonsense going on in Washington the fatigue of the American people and he ran as an outsider, and won.

The debate in the Senate today just reminded me how and why Trump beat the Washington establishment in 2016. These politcians have no respect for the American electorate. They insult the collectiive intelligence of the people with their 'policial speak' that is why DJT's straight talk was and is so refreshing to many.

DJT completely trashed the country while enriching the wealthiest among us.  For all the noise people like the Lincoln Project make, he has received historic approval ratings from the Republican electorate.

We now have a multi trillion annual deficit thanks to him and the GOP with absolutely nothing to show for it, massive unemployment and we're still struggling with Corona while most other countries have recovered.  He's objectively a failure.

And those things that you mention are not GOP or conservative ideas. The GOP entered into a bargain with him to get their judges and tax cuts. But I harbor no illusions that he has governed as a conservative or that he was ever really one.

It's interesting to wonder how the GOP primaries might have gone if they had used ranked choice voting.

DJT took advantage of the fracturing of the 'conventional republican' vote by all the many other GOP candidates.

If they had used ranked choice voting, would he have been able to do that?
NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

All the Republicans miscalculated in the primaries because they largely left Trump alone and villified one another hoping that when the dust settled they would be the standing alternative to Trump. By the time the dust settled though Trump had won the nomination pretty much.
