You really have to reach to take the statement "this is their (democrats) new hoax" is something other than implying he feels it is a hoax. But don't get too caught up in the semantics. Every statement he has made (it will magically disappear, young people are immune) is an attempt to downplay it.
One other point, my 84 year old father called it a hoax. He didn't just make this up. He heard it from friends who heard it on Fox News (yes, I did contract tracing so to speak to confirm this). This is the talk that is going on. The people who follow Trump are not calling it a hoax because NBC news reports that Trump says it. They think it is a hoax because of what Trump says (or in many cases doesn't say).
If the issue really was how news outlets are reporting what Trump says, all he has to do is make a clear statement and settle it. But the reporting is not the problem. Trump is sending the message he wants to send. His followers are receiving it just the way he wants them to receive it. His message is the virus is no big deal, just send the kids back to school, head back to the office, go out for a beer, and don't worry about it. Even if you catch it, it is just like the cold unless you are really old.
That message serves his best interest but is bad for the people of this country and for the economy. And it is 100% Trump's message. Don't try to blame someone else for this.
