I don't know if the Celtics want to part with what they'd have to to get him but, boy... If he could be got without giving up one of the top 5...

Hopefully Ainge is in on this.

EDIT: Sorry, I guess move this to the Trade Deadline thread.

It could be something like:

Minny receives: Langford, Poirier, Memphis 1st
Houston receives: Covington, Theis
Celtics receive: Capella

Keeps the Celtics core while upgrading the center position.

Not possible unless one of the top 5 are traded

and the only guy on the list that could be offered would be Hayward

Hayward, Edwards and future 1st

or

Hayward and Langford

end of the day, Danny and CBS won't make such a trade as they like the team the way it is.  And Robert Williams who plays a similar game to Capela will be back soon

but doubt this is what the Rockets are looking for

A player like Hayward is probably who they want. Capela for Covington and Theis is a downgrade for them

Actually it very much is. To make the salary work you'd have to make it a three team trade and then send the Rockets say two picks which they flip for the player they actually want.

The three team trade with Houston, Boston and Minnesota is one example. Its hard to do but not impossible

I've heard this is exactly what the Rockets are looking for: a high level defensive wing who can shoot the 3. Hayward is a playmaking wing, not a great shooter or defender (although good at both). Also, for them to take Hayward, they would need to include PJ Tucker. I don't see them doing that.

Theis is a downgrade, but I think they are committing to small ball right now. Theis is a rotation big who can give them some good minutes. They could take Kanter instead.

I don't think I would give them Williams if we had to include the Memphis pick.

They don't have to include Tucker and just include Nene

Celts would be the team that likely would need to include extra since Capela is locked up for the next little while

end of the day Celts are likely not interested

Capela can't shoot and is not a good passer.  average bbiq.   I mean he would fill in a need (rim protection/rebounds) but his fit overall on the Celts team is just ok

Celts just need Robert Williams to return at 100 percent health

  • STAND FIRM, SAY NO TO VIBE MEN
I'd rather trade for Eric Gordon tbh.
Jaylen Brown for All-NBA

He would be a deadly 6th man for the Celts

Problem with this trade is that, if the Wolves could get Capela for Covington, I'd guess they'd want to keep him under some silly idea of making a win-now move. Maybe they would do the smart thing and keep building slowly, but I doubt it.

Help me out with your math. Hayward makes 32 million a year. Capela 15 and Nene 2.5 million. They would need about 8 million more to get it in the ball park. They need at least Tucker unless they are going to combine Rivers, House, and McLemore, which seems pretty unlikely mid-season.

Or could it be something like:
Capela to Dallas
Lee plus MWE pick to Memphis
Iggy plus Timelord to Houston
Nene plus 2023 or 2024 unprotected Dallas pick to Boston

Each team accomplishes their goals

Houston gets a center plus a wing
Memphis gets a pick for Iggy
Dallas get their big man for the playoffs run
Celtics avoid having to bring 4 rookies next year and get a pick in the future to use in trades

Nene is only worth 2.5 million as outgoing salary. The Rockets tried to make him a human trade exception by having his salary inflated by roster incentives but the NBA basically said that salary structure was illegal. Thus Nene only counts as 2.5 in outgoing salary, hence why Hayward for Capella+Nene doesn't work.
