Would you prefer Rubio to Rondo, given Rondo is likely to come cheaper?
first, rubio plays far better defense now.

second, rubio is less moody and plays hard consistently.

third, rubio is a tiny bit better at 3 pointers over his career (32.2% vs 31.5%) but much better at FT(83.8% vs 60.5%). and as noted above, rubio probably fits better with CBS offense than rondo. but neither is an offensive force.

finally, rubio is 28 years old, rondo is 33 years old.

the big problem with rubio is his paycheck - he made $14.75 million last year. too much for a back up. but if kyrie walks, rubio might be a credible replacement.

Agreed with all points, but if we get AD, Rondo might be a better fit in terms of being good friends/previous teammates.

Plus Rondo would come cheaper, and be an awesome backup.

Rubio or Darren Collison would be my top choices of replacing Kyrie / Rozier if the price is right.

kyrie is scheduled to make over $21 million next year. if rubio signs at his current price, the celtics save over $6 million.

smart would serve as the third guard, back up pg.

the celtics do not need a top scorer at every position. so, to me, a starting line up such as this would be a good team in terms of offensive flow and defense:
- horford
- tatum
- brown
- hayward
- rubio

if we assume tatum or brown are the price for AD and a trade takes place, replace one of them with AD. that is an impressive lineup.

Kyrie's gonna opt out and sign for way more than that.  I'm not sure what the maximum that he can earn on the first year of his next deal is, but I suspect it's around $30 million.

Rubio and Collison seem like they're likely to get offers in the $10-12 million range.  Maybe less given their age.  They might just be Full-MLE guys at this point.

on rubio, you may be correct. but he is 28 years old and made $14.75 last year. that sounds about right to me going forward. but if you are closer in your estimate, so much the better.

If he’s taking $5 million to back up Kyrie, sure.

Folks get drunk on Rondo so easily.
I loved Rondo here (10 years ago!), but I would hate to see him wearing our jersey in a players role.

Rubio is a functional NBA player, but the kind that should fall in the line after we solve our first 8-9.

Rubio a great back up PG  idea, but that doesn't seem in the cards.

I didn't realize he was so young (28).

I think this team has other pressing needs before we get to backup PG. We need to sort out it starters first.

Rubio is a far superior PG to Rozier.

Similar to how Rozier played alongside Irving during parts of games I think Rubio could as well.  There is a chance we could lose both Smart (Davis trade) and Rozier free agency so I think we could find plenty of minutes for him.

Any idea why his usage has gone down the past 2 years? He played on 28 per game this past season and seems to be getting used less and less over past few years. His numbers estimated for low to mid 30's per game would be pretty decent. How is his net effect on court?

He would be a huge step up vs Rozier as a back up and could be a decent starter as well but not upper echelon I don't believe. He is still young as well and has yet to be in a decent organization it appears too. Intriguing.
