During our rebuilding years, I caught myself a lot of times wanting to see our guys dunking the ball in the rim.
Open layups are great, open shots are awesome, but it's not chess, sometimes I just want to see a guy in the green dunk.
Now that we got younger and more athletic, there is a positive trend in that regard.
It is not the most important thing in the world, and we are still below the league average, but I like that.

Season   Dunks per game
18/19   -   4,88 (19th)
17/18   -   4,49 (21st)
16/17   -   3,27 (29th)
15/16   -   2,51 (30th)

It's an interesting thing to think about. The type of player matters, someone like Jaylen is going to dunk more than someone like Kyrie, but I also imagine that a dunk is indicative of the easiest basket possible. Not just a lay up but so open that one can gather and dunk. So maybe dunks coincide with easier shots that result from better offense?

Again, the roster construction matters and some guys just don't get above the rim while others (like Gobert, Deandre Jordan, etc.) don't have the range to do much else, so I don't know if I actually believe this. I'd be interested to see some data with how number of dunks in a season compare to offensive efficiency.

I think that with the evolution of 3pt shooting, dunks mean less than before.
Additionally, you can lay it in often (not always) times instead of dunking it.
I can't dig for stats now but from the top of my head, I'd say that dunks are a function of:
athleticism (length included), transition usage% and poor defense on the opposite side.

In recent times, dunks are often preferred to laying it in because there are so many rim defenders out there now, even guys who don't play the front-court.  I simply do not recall seeing so many blocked layups 20-30 years ago.  It takes great athleticism to do that.
