I am wondering if someone can explain the motivation for this trade, I know it must have to do with rules of the cba or cap space but I just don't know the reason.
1. Celtics clearly wanted to unload Jabari Bird;
2. They effectively paid Atlanta to take him off their hands, as the 2nd round pick is very heavily protected - they will likely never see it.
3. Atlanta is expected to waive Bird imminently.
So, why is it possible that Atlanta can waive Bird, and Boston could not just do that themselves and save the money that went to Atlanta in the trade?
Thanks for explaining!
