People are missing a big factor here. The team who has the contractual rights can pay the most money, I believe. People think these payers will take less money to play for a team they choose. But, would you? Think about it. A league where 70 percent of these athletes go bankrupt and a large number of them support extended families, why will they take less money then they deserve?  Danny Ainge has masterfully set up a scenario where they can own contract rights to both Irving and Davis and unload the bank.

In another year the Lakers will continue to be in shambles and LeBron is fading as he grows a year older. Why would Davis head for that mess for less money?

This whole thing is agent and media driven.

If money was the biggest motivating factor for Davis, he'd be staying in New Orleans.  Only they can offer him the 35% max prior to hitting the 10 year service threshold.

Sure, any other team with his bird right's can offer larger raises and an additional year, but that isn't really a major issue for the truly elite players.  In reality, a shorter contract is probably better for Davis' earning potential, anyways.

So many people AND the media forget about this, or aren't aware.  He can take a 4-year deal and then sign another contract at age 30.  If he takes 5/240, he is 31 for the next deal.

I do agree to an extent. However, both Irving and Hayward gave up opportunities to sign for more money with their former teams. Irving could have stayed in Cleveland, but asked for a trade. I believe both players gave up a lot of money when they decided to join the Celtics. Obviously, they both have max contracts, but they lost an extra year on their deals and have lower pay increases per season.
