Listen to Adam Kaufman podcast interview with Duke orthopedic surgeon. If just removing screws (20% likelihood), 6-8 week recovery. If necessary to scrape cartilage, 6-8 month recovery. Doc feels 80% chance Kyrie’s knee problem is arthritis/cartilage damage that will affect him the rest of his career. I’m paraphrasing but man that interview was alarming. Sure hope he is wrong but bottom line is I’d be very surprised if Kyrie returns this season or playoffs, and I pray he will be able to resume his play next year without pain.

Sorry to share such a gloomy forecast.

While this doesn't necessarily mean that Kyrie cannot play and play well, it certainly makes it more likely that he will not play or play well.

I stand by an earlier point I made:  Danny needs to take a whole lot of crap for this.  This injury was known and gave away a top-5 picks for Kyrie.

I’ll get back to this at the end of next year, when we are hanging banner 18.

Why do you think Kyrie will not be hurt next year?

Here is what Sports Illustrated reported: “Not only was the ‘minimally-invasive procedure’ able to relieve the tension in Irving’s knee in the short term, but it also revealed that the fractured patella Irving suffered in 2015 has completely healed and his knee is structurally sound overall.”

Why do you think Kyrie *will* be hurt next year?

Sounds promising to me. I fully expect to see Kyrie back for the 1st round of the playoffs.

Why do they keep calling it a "minimally invasive procedure" when it's abundantly clear it's a simple knee scope?

Overly complicated euphemisms make people sound smart.

This trade is biting him real bad now...

Boy. The panic is strong in this thread.

Shame on that doctor for going on the podcast to discuss a surgery he had absolutely no inside knowledge of. 80% chance there's a cartilage issue? Without seeing any medical records? That's just irresponsible.

That's what media boils down to these days. Hot takes for views and conversation. This surgery was a win win. Kyrie gets rid of the irritation and Celtics get a look at the structure of his knee before needing to hand over a max offer.

Plus Scary Terry still has souls to collect before the post season starts so a win win win!!
ok fine

And what was it, an 8-month recovery if there was cartilage involved?  His opinion was ridiculous from the start.

I must admit I bought into the panic after listening to the podcast. Feeling better after reading post surgery reports.

Fingers crossed this will eliminate the pain and that the knee is sound.

It's just frustrating to hear a surgeon completely disregard facts to spew conjecture and panic an entire fanbase. What was he hoping to gain from that?

Needing hardware to stabilize a fracture is common. Because it's not the body's natural state, irritation is also common.  Needing an additional procedure to remove hardware is routine. There's nothing in the reported details that suggest anything out of the ordinary. We're going to be dealing with this again with Hayward at some point, so people need to ignore the doom & gloom hottakes.

So Kyrie has been playing with this lingering issue since 2015?!?!

Wow...he is even better than we think he is!

He's been playing with one knee tied behind his back!!

I can't wait to see him at 90+%!!!

So I've been reading about Kyrie's knee injury.

At first they said he needed screws removed.

Then I hear they need to remove a wire from his knee.

So which is it, screws or wire, or both?

And if it is 'minimally invasive' why does it take 3-6 weeks to recover?

All sounds very odd, but hoping they did the surgery properly and Kyrie recovers fully so he can put this behind him.

Celtics hit with all kinds of injuries this year, it's bizarre!

Again, this is all normal. He likely had screws and a tension wire inserted at the time of the repair - as is standard with bone fractures of this nature. 3-6 weeks to recover because even with minimally invasive procedures, you're still cutting into someone's knee. Incisions need to heal properly, which is why there's typically a 2-3 week minimum just for that. He's been dealing with soreness for awhile, that's likely going to take a few weeks to subside completely - hence 6 weeks if the team opts to take a super conservative approach.
