How would The Celtics match salaries to get Gasol? I can't see a path that makes sense.

Al Horford... and I wouldn't trade him for Gasol straight up.

Without trading Horford or Kyrie or Hayward you'd have to give up practically everyone else on the roster. It's a nonstarter.

you sign someone for the full DPE i.e. 8.4 million and then trade that person along with Morris, Nader, Yabu, and perhaps 1 other player.  So it is doable, but it couldn't be done for 3 months and could only be done if Boston used the full DPE very soon.

In a vacuum, Gasol > Horford. Having said that, I wouldn't do the trade either.

I think it's too late to do it by signing someone with the DPE.  But there is still time to do it by trading for someone with the DPE and then trading them again.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

Sure, but that's not a deal that Memphis is likely to accept.  They get very little in return.  I am sure they would want Horford and maybe picks or one or more of our better young players.

Gasol or Horford, interesting question.  Probably moot because why would Memphis want Horford (I guess we could give them back their pick).  But just as an exercise, would we be better with Gasol?  They are actually very similar players.  Horford already knows our system.

Hard to see him ending up on Boston.

How about Tristan Thompson + Zizic + Nets Pick for Gasol.

This would change everything for the Cavs.  They end up with IT, Crowder, and Gasol for Irving and Thompson.  Not bad.

For the playoffs, their team is:

IT
Smith
LeBron
Love
Gasol

with Wade, Crowder, Frye, Shumpert, Korver off the bench.

Memphis gets a still valuable pick and a promising big plus a 26 year old decent big in Thompson.  Maybe they could do better but I am not sure.

I just saw in another thread that Gasol has a $10M trade kicker.  If accurate, my trade doesn't work unless he waives it but my trade did clear the Trade Machine so I am not sure:

They already made their choice and fired their coach backing up Gasol.

Not necessarily.

(...) nothing should be presumed when it comes to the way the Grizzlies handle their front office and coaching staff.

“I don’t think they’re done making changes,” one league executive said on Monday. “They could still move Gasol, they could still go into a rebuilding situation, but it would be harder if Gasol was saying he wants out. They have had plenty of offers for Gasol, and they have a couple of months to sort out whether they pull the trigger. But don’t be surprised if they do, even after this.”

That’s a different angle through which the Fizdale firing can be viewed — not just as a choice between Fizdale or Gasol, but as a way to protect one of the franchise’s two biggest assets. Two other league sources agreed that Marc Gasol still could be trade bait. When a player demands a trade in a public forum, two things almost always happen — and the combination is a nightmare for the franchise. One, the player winds up getting dealt; and two, the player’s value plummets because executives looking to make a deal know they’re dealing with a desperate team.

The Grizzlies did not want to look desperate. They have had interest and a good spate of offers for Gasol, and though the Grizzlies have resisted getting actively involved in moving him, they’d been on track to revisit the possibility at this year’s trade deadline all along.

Conley/Gasol for IT/Love/Thompson/BKN and additional picks might put the Cavs over the top and set up the inevitable rebuild in Memphis.

Somebody tell the Grizzlies to buy him out.

Gasol declines his option ($25M), then Memphis buys him out for $35M.
Memphis saves about $30M.

Boston signs him for prorated portion of $8.4M, and he's a free agent in the offseason.
Gasol gets $41M + 3 years/ $45M in the offseason and he's made all his money back and then some.

Boston starts him at center.
Gasol/ Horford/ Tatum/ Brown/ Irving
Baynes/ Morris/ Ojeyele/ Rozier/ Smart
(Theis, Larkin, Yabu)

Wishful thinking, completed.

They can potentially trade him for at least one elite asset (for instance the Brooklyn pick), but yeah sure, why not buy him out instead? Makes perfect sense.

Yes, but with one important difference: Horford is a career 36% 3-pt shooter, but with steady improvement over the past 4 years of taking that shot to where he is shooting 43% this season.  Gasol is a career 34% 3-pt shooter but it's not really in his arsenal.  I think this is a significant difference in Brad's system.

Untrue. Since last season Gasol has averaged more 3PA than Horford.

Gasol is a better low post scorer, passer, rebounder, and rim protector. Horford is the more mobile player and can defend the perimeter better.
