If he was going to do that he would have made a trade at the draft.  People didn’t think he could make all his picks so they thought they could get him to make a bad deal.  We’ll he traded two for one and stashed three picks, so he showed them.
I really think he is ion it for the big picture.  As great as the Ray Allan and KG deals were it only gave us a short window to compete. We were a real contender for 3 years and over achieved the 4th year.   IF KG doesn’t go down in year 2 we can win the championship and likewise if Perkins doesn’t go down in the finals we could have won that one too.   By year 4 the lack of depth and age of our players caught up to us.
I think Danny wants to build something lasting like San Antonio has and they have done it through the draft.   Sure getting Duncan was key but we have two more shots at that great transitional player.   I think both Ball and Fultz can be that type of player.  Heck brown could develop into a Kawhi Leonard or James Worthy type of player.    At the very least Brown and our Brooklyn pick should be very good staring level players.  Add the 2018 Brooklyn pick and the possibility of sinning a young free agent and we are looking good for a long time.
We are contenders now in the second that were are ranked 2nd and fighting for a chance at the eastern conference finals to lose to King James.  With Golden state in the west and Cleveland in the east there really is no quick fix trade that beats either team, and I think Danny knows this.
If you take away smart and Crowder and both Brooklyn picks to add Cousins, is the team really any better?  Cousins is going on 6 straight years of not being able to get his team to the 8th spot in the playoffs.  There is and has been talent on that Kings roster.
I would prefer, and I think Danny would too, to build with both Brooklyn picks and be a long term force in the NBA.   There are up and coming teams like Minnesota, Milwaukee, and dear I say Philadelphia that look to have great futures. If we go all in for a 3 year window we’ll burn out just when LeBron starts to decline, and those young teams will be ready to dominate the league.
I think we’ll try and trade if we can but I don’t see us trading either Brooklyn pick.   The return just won’t be enough now to offset what we give up latter.
Nice post, TP.

Danny is not the kind of GM to be swayed by sensational news like another area sports team winning a championship.  Why should he?

Regarding Cousins, I jumped off the bandwagon last week.  He might make the team better even with losing Smart and/or Crowder, but not better enough to win it all.

The successes and failures of other pro-sports teams have literally zero affect on what Danny Ainge does.

I trust DA to do things that will improve the team's ability to win championships, not just a championship. The big 3 era very nearly produced two and with luck three was a probability.

When you consider where the team is sitting now and the assets available to improve, there is no need to be rash. DA will talk to interested parties on his terms.

And he is smart enough to know that even a star that will play 2 months with the team is not enough to compete this year against GSW and CLE.

Let the Warriors lose and see Durant walk away, let LeBron win and start aging/slowing down. Time is on our side.

Yeah, it easily could have been 2 or 3 banners, but clearly the window was limited.

Perhaps some folks think DA will follow the same path he did to create the 2007-2008 team, especially given how he has been collecting assets.  That is not necessarily the case.  For example, Al Jefferson was a better prospect at the time than Marcus Smart is now.  OTOH, the current BKN picks are far better assets than any pick he had back then.  Point is, the two situations are not really comparable.  I believe DA will let circumstances dictate the best approach.

I think you're being paranoid.   Word of advice, you should only worry about things you can control in life.   No one can control what Ainge does, you can't control if the Sun comes up, so why waste energy on it?    To do so, is a recipe for trouble.   There are things you can control and worry is a  helpful tool to mitigate those things or prepare for them.

Now this is easy for me to say but harder to do because some folks are just prone to worrying.

This thread should actually be named: "Anyone else kind of worried that Ainge will make a significant deal and the rebuild will be over?"

The fear of a championship here is unlike anything I've seen in sports.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

The fear of a championship here with these Cavaliers and Warriors while wasting our future is unlike anything I've seen in sports. Logic, is called.

Exactly...I think "Anyone Else Kind of Worried that Ainge"...will hold out for a deal and miss thinking that he holds all the leverage. Yes, I don't want to gut our current team, but you've got to swing for the fences when the time is right, and this deadline may be that time.

People want to believe that building through the draft is the ideal way to go, but it doesn't always pan out that way. See Cleveland and Anthony Bennett. You've got to ride a GM for a superstar with the hopes that they want to trade their superstar for picks.

As much as I want to draft players - young players can only take you so far - an all you need is a major injury to derail their career - then what happens to your plan to build through the draft???
