If Jaylen Brown moves clearly ahead of Green on the depth chart, Marcus Smart improves, and maybe RJ Hunter looks like a rotation-worthy player, does Gerald Green become expendable?  Or maybe he just doesn't work out and can't quite grasp the defensive scheme.   Is he someone who might end up being flipped for another player who might provide depth that could be more needed at a different position or dumped for a second-round pick to clear a roster spot for another player?

Some people are excited about Green's addition, but he's not guaranteed to be a useful player.  He signed a one-year deal, so he's not in the long-term plans.  It's almost like he was signed so that Jaylen Brown didn't have to be force-fed Evan Turner's minutes and can be brought along slowly if needed.

On the other hand, he may be useful enough that he is wanted on the roster as part of a deep playoff run, with the intention of letting him walk after the season without getting anything in return, leaving a spot open for the next reclamation project.

Maybe.

On the other hand, if he is beat out by a 19 year old rookie and a mediocre late first round pick, then would he bring back depth at a more needed or different position?  Green's value seems based on his play in Phoenix, but another failed stint makes his Phoenix run an aberration.

I think the best scenario for moving Green is he returns to his Phoenix form while players like Brown and Smart outplay expectations but aren't quite able to supplant Green in the rotation.

It's a matter of wait-and-see. I've said plenty of times that I think Gerald could fit marvelously with this team and could be the most underrated addition of the summer because on paper, his style of play matches the style the Celtics like to play. Not to mention he's a solid career 3-pt shooter playing for a team that needs good 3-pt shooting since Terry Rozier, Marcus Smart, and Jaylen Brown haven't proven they can be reliable from deep.

Green is the team's latest reclamation project that will help the young ones develop smoothly. If the young kids prove they have what it takes, then yeah, he's expendable, but if they're not, I'll be glad we have him on the team this year.

What if Green is an adequate reserve with obvious value who is beaten out by a gifted rookie and a late blooming late first round pick?

Nope. Injury insurance and his ability to address such a huge need (3 pt shooting), in my book, pretty much guarantees his number will be called in a crucial moment (or several) of the season. Jaylen will also be a wildcard with all signs pointing to him taking considerable time to develop.
