Here is a link to the current trade exceptions and expiring dates.

Interesting note came out today about Hornets and Spurs interest in trading up in the draft. Charlotte for example holds 2 expiring trade exceptions totaling 1.2m which expire on 6/25. Spurs want to trade up from 29, Hornets want to trade up from 22.

Might a deal where we receive a veteran leader such as David West or Kevin Martin + 1.2m trade exception in return for pick 16 work?

Boston receives: Kevin Martin or David West, 1.2m trade exception
San Antonio receives: Pick #22 from Hornets
Charlotte receives: Pick #16 from Boston

I don't have time to go into it, but that's not how trade exceptions work, at all.  Pretty much that entire trade is both impossible, and makes no sense with what teams value even if it were.

If you want to learn more about how they do work, please go to this amazing website:

No. Trade exceptions don't work like that.

Trade exceptions are created when a team sends out more salary than they bring in in a trade, and cannot be transferred or traded to another team.  The purpose of the trade exception is to absorb a salary smaller than the amount of the TPE without sending salary out (like when we took in Marcus Thornton with the big TPE from the KG/Pierce trade).  And two small trade exceptions aren't the same as one bigger one - you can't combine their amount to absorb a bigger salary

Also, given that we'll be under the cap again this summer, trade exceptions aren't useful.  They have a cap hold, which would decrease our amount of cap space unless renounced, and we can just absorb salaries into our cap space without a trade exception, Even if such a trade were possible, it wouldn't make sense for us
I'm bitter.
