I'm tired of the exaggerated emphasis placed on being a "lottery pick". It's as if people think there is some magical border between the 14 and 15 pick such that it makes sense to group the 14th pick with the first three. At #14, teams are just hoping to get a starting caliber player. At the top of the lottery people are hoping for all stars or better.

I saw an absurd analysis comparing the number of lottery pick players on 2 playoff teams, acting as if having a #14 pick has similar value to having a #1.  It is even more meaningless than talking about who deserves a "max contact" without discussing the dollar value of such a contract for individual players based on years of service.

The significance of the lottery ends once drafting positions are settled. If we referred to picks with more meaningful terminology like 'top 14 pick', it would be more obvious how arbitrary a dividing line that is.

Agreed.  It's probably a carry-over from the early days of the lottery when there were only 7 lottery picks.  That's an era (the Len Bias era), we'd like to forget.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I'm sure Kelly Olynyk would disagree with you.

I'd be happy if the National TV Broadcasters would stop using the term "Give Him Credit"....50 times a game.

Its all about the money guys... Loto = more money.  Pretty sure thats why it is a big deal.   Guys get chips on there shoulders when they can't say their the top 14 pick in the draft.   Pretty sure thats more concern for them then you being upset at Analysts "pretending" has "great" significance.

Paul Pierce was p---ed about not getting drafted higher.
