Sully's last couple of months were awful but he is not as bad a player as some celticbros argue.
If we can get him on a cheap two year deal, I'd be pretty happy.
About Zeller now, it depends on which other bigs we sign/trade for, but again he's a useful back up to have during the regular season (although he is borderline useless for the playoffs).
Sullinger was one of the best players on the team all year long. He ran into a horrendous matchup against Atlanta. Had we made it to Cleveland, everyone would be singing a different tune about his value.
He was by far the best rebounder on the team. He was a high in the ranking for net rating, and was really underrated for his defense all year long.
We are definitely giving him the qualifying offer, and then it is up to the rest of the league to make the decision for us. If someone breaks the bank @ 10M or more per for him, we let him walk and say thank you for your play here.
If someone doesn't, I think $8-$9M per year for Sully is a good deal given his talent.
Sully may have indeed the best rebounder on the floor. He had stretches where he was one of the best players on the floor. But what does that mean?
He can't match-up against athletics bigs. He can't run the floor. And his on ball defense is problematic. Why put good money after bad?
Let's really put things in perspective, Both Rookies, Myles Turner (Indiana) and Chicago's Bobby Portis are worth more than Sullinger. So where does he really fit in?
Sullinger at 3 million a year as a role player. Fine.
Is he actually worth anything in a sign and trade? Should have moved him when he could have been worth something in return.
He is listed as a top 5 free agent among Power Forwards via HoopsHype
http://hoopshype.com/2016/05/03/nba-free-agency-2016-power-forwards/But I'd take Josh Smith Terrence Jones, or even old faithful Brandon Bass over Sullinger
Bismack Biyombo ( C) or even Dwight Howard ( who I suspect Ainge will consider)
But who knows, maybe we'll draft a PF in the One slot.
