Time is running out for contract extensions for Zeller and Sully (Oct 31 or Nov 2 deadline?).  Would you try to get a deal done now or wait til next summer when they both can become RFAs?  You may recall AB became a RFA a couple of years ago, but C's and he quickly agreed to a deal before another  team made a huge offer that C's would have had to match to keep his services.  Should either of these guys be on the team next year and if yes, what should their next contract look like?

We should def keep Zeller. He has great hands. give him the ball close to the hoop and he can find a way for it to go in as good as anyone. I don't think his value around the league is all the high now so he shouldn't break the bank to keep.

I've been thinking NO on Sully for a while but I wonder what another team would pay? I imagine Sully would rather play this season out to try to get a big offer sheet.

Unless either player wants to sign an extremely team friendly deal, I see no reason to do anything now.  Zeller looks like he could play himself out of the rotation and Sullinger hasn't proven he's worthy of a long term commitment yet.  With Zeller, I think there's a good chance his value may actually decrease by this summer, so I'd definitely hold out.  With Sully, it could go the other way, but I'd rather pay more later and be sure he's worthy of it than gamble now on a long term deal and then see him continue to do what he's done up to this point.

Given the surplus of cap space I doubt either signs for numbers the C's would like. Especially given the abundance of bigs we have all on short deals. I'm betting the C's want to see this year play out before they commit big.

Personally I hope we can give them both extension now rather then later.  This has to reasons behind doing it.  At the trade deadline it gives us more value if they're signed for more then this year.  They're both young players with skills and can be starters for teams or great 6th man of the bench for bigs.  Also if we don't trade them, this year in coming years when the cap spikes they'll have cheaper contracts where teams might be willing to trade for.

I'd be happy with an extension along these lines for both.

Zeller - 4 years, 6.5-8.5 million a year.  He's a solid starter if he needs to be for us.  If not he's a valuable back up center.  It would probably be closer to an 8.5 million because he is a 7 footer.

Sully - 4 years, 6-7.5 million a year.  Also have some wording about his injuries due to past, but he's worth it.  If willing to sign a contract with protection cause of his past he's worth the 7.5 for me because we'd have protection.

The C's are trying to stay as flexible as possible in case an opportunity to acquire a star comes along. The only way they would sign an extension is if it was at such low money that the players would improve their trade value.

I doubt Zeller or Sully would agree to this so I would be surprised if either got an extension and I support not giving them one.

I don't mean to be cynical but honestly, who cares?   they both don't really move the dial one way or another.

so i guess i've talked myself into no.   just wait and see.

Would say no to Zeller definitely. He looks like a good player but he's a center that you can't run conventional post ups for, doesn't rebound well, doesn't defend well, and can't stretch the floor beyond 15 feet. Anything thing else he does well doesn't outweigh those negatives.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Personally I think Sully has more potential. Just a better all round player.
Zeller's a good back up center in the NBA but he'll never be anything more. Sully at least has the opportunity to be a 12 point 8 rebound back up PF or starter on a team with some established stars. If he somehow does decide to fix his diet, he could be an 18 point 10 rebound monster but he'll never reach those heights due to lack of stamina with his current physique. He could drop 25 pounds at still have that enormous backside to push everyone around.

I'd be willing to give Sully a solid 4 x $8-10 million a year deal *if* it included a weight clause with some bonuses for staying under a certain weight.

How about a 4x $5 million a year deal with a $3 million dollar weight clause. lol.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Zeller runs out of talent against the starting lineups.

Yes. I just don't get the Zeller obsession. Minus playing pretty well on the pick and roll, he basically does nothing else you'd want a center to do.

People cling to this idea that he's our only "true 7-footer," but even that is illusory as he has short arms and plays smaller than his size.
