surprisingly so.  on paper, this roster is not as good as the one that started the season yet they're performing much better as a team.

this is not a very talented team. this has to be the result of CBS making the most out of each player's strengths.

i do hope to see CBS finally have talented players to coach. that will be fun.

completely agree.  it's a team of bench players.

fine, but its your argument, so please back it up with stats. show that the younger players, not the vets, increased their production in the last 30 odd games and carried this team to more victories.

You guys really oughta read Bill Simmons article today about the teams that aren't contenders. He took the words out of my mouth.

"Boston Celtics (36-42)

Tao of Dom: “I live my life a quarter-mile at a time. Nothing else matters: not the mortgage, not the store, not my team and all their (bologna). For those 10 seconds or less, I’m free.”

Dom’s greatest quote goes to the greatest on-the-fly rebuilding job in recent NBA history: In less than 24 months, the Celtics turned two Hall of Famers, an All-Star point guard, the league’s most expensive coach, Jeff Green and Jason Terry into Brooklyn’s unprotected 2016, 2017 and 2018 first-round picks; a 2015 Clippers first-rounder; a 2016 Dallas first-rounder (top-seven protected); a future protected Memphis first-rounder that becomes unprotected in 2021; Isaiah Thomas; Jae Crowder; Tyler Zeller; James Young; Gerald Wallace’s 2016 expiring; Philly’s second-rounders in 2015 and 2016; Minnesota’s second-rounders in 2016 and 2017; four other second-round picks; and last but not least, 2016 President-Elect Brad Stevens, a coach who’s so ridiculously good that the Celtics might grab a no. 7 seed during the same season in which they dealt their two best players and suited up 22 different players. I’ve never felt better/prouder/happier/giddier about a team that’s six games below .500. What a season.

So, what happens going forward? Get a taste of the playoffs, show the rest of the NBA (and every free agent, as well as the agents of those free agents) that you happen to employ a coach who’s a freaking Jedi, keep mastering that pace-and-space/balls-to-the-wall style, and eventually, the Celts can land one or two difference-makers (either with their picks or with a package that comes for those picks). They are exceedingly well positioned — they have the coach, the front office, the role players and the right style. They just need (gulp) the franchise player. It’s like watching someone serve an absolutely perfect four-course dinner that doesn’t have an actual entrée yet. Well, that entrée is coming. One quarter-mile at a time, baby."

Yup. Exactly what I was thinking. The Celtics have a great set of role players, but no go to guys, and as we all know, the ones that were the closest to that were jettisoned a few months ago and ironically, things have gotten better since then. I really do love where the Celtics are going even if they are mediocre right now.

The one question is, who is that entree the Celtics need and could realistically acquire?

It's pretty simple, really. Isaiah Thomas was the best player involved in any Celtics-related trade this season. The team that gets the best player in a trade usually wins out. That is all.

No, it is not.

Isaiah Thomas was the best player in all Celtics-related trades this season. And the team that gets the best player usually wins out. In any case, Thomas + Crowder + Jerebko is not a downgrade in talent from Rondo + Green, paper or no paper.

And Dallas is like what? 28-23 after getting Rondo? Tonight might be 28-24 if Denver sinks them in 2OT.

We should shoot for Leonard.

Here is what I hope.  Spurs win it all again Pop , Ginobili, and Duncan retire and Leonard not wanting to be part of a rebuild moves on to Greener pastures. (Get it  ;))

So we should all be rooting for the Spurs.

I can dream....

I think we need to stop thinking of these guys as an under .500 7th or 8th seed.  In reality they're about a 5 or 6 because the current team began with the Thomas trade. It's a team without an all star but one with a couple of guys you can go to late in games - which is something they didn't have for much of the season.  Thomas is one of those two, but Turner developed into one.

They still have no rim protection or effective low post defense and if you contain Thomas you likely beat them.  But they're a legit 5 or 6 seed because they now beat the teams they're supposed to and give you an effort almost every night.  They can adjust on the fly, have a coaching advantage on many nights and play decent team defense despite the shortcomings I listed.

They're a good team, albeit one with a ceiling of losing a competitive series against a 1-3 team in the playoffs,.
